The setting for the film is the year of 2154 on the island of Pandora, which of course is a fictional world. This film shows the degree of greed that the human race possess and how they are willing to destroy who and whatever they can in order to take possession of Pandora's precious mineral resources. The humans consider what they are doing as progress but the tribe that lives there sees their world being destroyed. The natives that inhabit the island are called the Na'vi and they are a race of indigenous humanoids who take great pride in their world and feel threaten by the efforts of the human race to take over their resources. The humanoids do not perceive what the humans are doing as progress because they consider their environment sacred or holy ground.
There are some people that don't know what an Avatar is, so let me tell you that the term refers to a genetically engineered body called an avatar. The avatar looks and functions like the Na'vi body, but it is controlled by a human mind. Therefore, once the connection between the human mind is severed, then the avatar can no longer exist.
I recently had the opportunity to see Avatar in 3D at a local theater in Virginia and I must tell you, I am not a fan of sci-fi movies, so I went in with some reserves. However, as the film continued I realized this is a great story line of Love, Passion and Commitment. It played out like a real action adventure/drama. I was hanging on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The story was constantly moving and exciting. I will have to say that it was only in the initial scenes of the movie that I even noticed that it was in 3D. Near the end of the movie I couldn't tell that it was 3D at all. Therefore, I wouldn't say that 3D added a whole lot to the enjoyment of the film, however, it's a personal choice should you decide to check it out in 3D. I will caution you however, that the 3D version is a little pricier than the regular movie.
Bottom-line: Avatar is a must see in regular viewing or 3D. It has elements in the movie that everyone will enjoy.
