Avatar Amazes; Beats Out Sherlock Homes

Drew Bush
I went to see James Cameron's Avatar movie on December 20th just two days after it came out. I must say that I was very impressed with the movie. It was definitely something different from all the other movies I have seen this year and in years past.

I remember seeing the first previews for Avatar several months ago while seeing other movies in the movie theater. When I first saw the previews, I must admit that I was quite skeptical of the movie. At first I thought it would be another movie for teens and preteens. However, as time went on and I heard more about the movie, I began to warm up to the idea of seeing it in theaters. Also, since James Cameron did make some excellent movies in the past (Terminator and Titanic to name a couple), I decided to give it a chance.

I do like to watch certain science fiction movies on occasion; however, I am very picky. I did like Terminator, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, and the Alien movies with Sigourney Weaver. Besides the fact that James Cameron was the director, the fact that Sigourney Weaver was in the movie drew me to it even more. She really is a good actress.

So, how would I rate the overall movie experience? On a scale of 1-5, I give it a 5. I did not get a chance to go to the 3-D version, but it was still really good. I really do like the premise of the movie. It really does go into the human urge to take over and destroy just so money can be made. It kind of reminded me of how the Europeans came in and tried to run out the Native Americans. In the movie, some of the human visitors are out to collect a huge deposit of an exotic rock that rests under the natives land. In an attempt to gain the trust of the natives, a few select humans (including Sigourney Weaver's character) are transferred into genetically engineered bodies that are practically identical to the natives. One of the humans is a soldier who is promised by the general that he will be able to walk again if he successfully completes the mission. As the soldier spends time with the natives, he falls in a love with the daughter of the Natives' ruler and things take a quick turn and the action takes off. The special effects are unbelievable and the movie keeps your attention all the way through. It has only been out for two weeks and has already made over $200 million in the U.S. alone (Internet Movie Database). Even the Sherlock Holmes movie debut could not overcome Avatar. Doesn't that say something?
