Avatar: Ground-Breaking Movie Now on DVD with Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Sigourney Weaver

Evil Humans Come to Pillage a Pristine World

Kathryn E. Darden
Avatar, the ground-breaking movie starring Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Wes Studi and Laz Alonso, is a beautiful movie to watch - a thrilling cinematic experience unlike anything I have seen before. I am not usually a fan of animated films, but the techniques used to bring the creatures and world of Pandora to life are so realistic that I was captivated.

Avatar's Computer-Generated Characters

Using computer-generated characters which came of age with The Lord of the Ring's Gollum, and utilizing Lord of the Rings veterans like Weta Digital and conceptual design, costume and specialty props by Richard Taylor Avatar owes a lot to the success of The Lord of the Rings for setting new standards in movie technology, costuming and props. The look for the flora, fauna and humanoids of Pandora is surreal but believable, and it is easy to get caught up in this epic science fiction film.

The Cameron People Have Sent us a Message

The story itself is exciting and thought-provoking and could have been as beautiful as the cinematography had producer/writer James Cameron wielded his liberal manifesto and New-Age religion with less heavy-handed intent. The evil humans have come to a pristine world with only one intention - rape and pillage the land to obtain unobtanium. They will kill and bulldoze anything in their way to get it, even the sacred mother goddess tree, Eywa, and the scantily-clad native Na'vi people who worship it...er...her. The most evil of these naughty capitalists, Colonel Miles Quaritch, spouts lines from the Bush administration about terrorism and shock and awe. Other than that, Avatar is a good movie, but if you are bored by liberal indoctrination or offended by seeing conservatives dressed as fanatical, greedy villains and misquoted in the process, Avatar may not be for you. As Jake Sully might say: "The Cameron People have sent us a message... that they can propagandize whatever they want." (James Cameron isn't the only one who can misquote!)

Avatar the Best Selling Blu-ray of All Time

However, if you enjoy sci-fi fantasy, lush scenery, a sweet if predictable love story and fantastic creatures, Avatar has a lot to recommend it once you get past the propaganda. That is probably why it just became the best selling Blu-ray of all time after only four days in stores, with 2.7 million units sold in North America alone (the previous record was 2.5 million units).

Avatar with Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Sigourney Weaver (Alien), Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez ("Lost," Resident Evil), Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans) and Laz Alonso released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Thursday, April 22, 2010.

Oh, and Colonel Miles Quaritch... BEST charachter in the film, period. If I was to ever find myself in a fight, THAT's the guy I'd want backing me up. That man was hard core!

Avatar... liberal political propaganda at its finest. I do agree about the visuals and graphics, they were stunning. The story has been done to death however. Ever seen "Dances with Wolves"? "Ferngully"? "The Last Samurai"? Take those same stories, put them on an alien planet... that's Avatar's plot.

Great Review! I agree about the films artistic merit-it was captivating, while yes-ignoring the propaganda......

Great review, I saw the movie myself in 3D. It was great, just ignore the evil human message...
