Avatar Makes the Billion Dollar Club

James Cameron's number one ranked science fiction movie surpasses global earnings of $1 billion dollars. Avatar stretched its unbeatable climb to the top of the box office charts in just 17 days. Thanks to word of mouth, over priced 3D ticket prices, and consecutive holiday weekends that began just a few days ago. I can see it now, through more marketing and merchandising this film can break many records down the road. There will probably be video games, board games, toys, stuffed animals you name it that represent parts of this movie.

According to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office, James Cameron's sci-fi movie grossed $68.3 million over New Years weekend, a tiny 10 percent drop from Christmas weekend for a $352.1 million domestic total -- easily the biggest third weekend in the U.S. ever (2002's Spider-Man had held the record with $45 million). To realize the true popularity of this movie, it took The Dark Knight pretty much its whole time being played just to make it to that milestone.

Avatar wasn't the only film to produce serious box-office numbers either. Sherlock Holmes racked up an outstanding $38.4 million for second place, a 41 percent drop for $140 million total. In third place, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel put up $36.6 million, dropping just 25 percent for $157 million total and third place.

The Blind Side actually improved upon its total last week, rising 8 percent for $12.7 million and $209.1 million total. Actress Sandra Bullock is the only one ever to have a film marketed on her star power alone pass $200 million in U.S. box office. I saw this movie and it was one of the best movies based on a true story I have ever seen. Sandra Bullock did a great job and played the part as good as it gets. If you like movies about sports, especially watching the character start out with nothing and have to work their way all the way to the top. Then this is a must see.

I actually felt like I was in an episode of Seinfeld at the theater. After finding our seats, there were a few minutes before the previews so I went to get some popcorn. I left my coat on my seat and purchased the popcorn and returned to the entrance where they check your ticket. I figured the guy would remember me coming in and giving my ticket and possibly remembering me passing by him again to go buy popcorn. Unfortunately, he didn't and as I was walking back to the theater, he asked for my ticket. I set my popcorn down and handed him my stub. He said this is the stub receipt not the ticket stub. I tried to convince him that it was in my coat pocket. He played dumb and said what coat? I said, the coat on my seat in the theater. After the line behind me started backing up, he finally said, oh just go.

I've heard it's a must see movie. I will have to watch it as soon as I get the chance.

I have yet to see Avatar, but I absolutely have to! What thrills me is that Cameron's Titanic had previously grossed the most at the box offices, and now he surpassed himself!
