Avatar Makes Science Fiction the Most Popular Movie Genre in Hollywood History

Avatar Crowns James Cameron Hollywood's Biggest Sci-Fi Geek King

Will Stape
Sci-Fi gets a bad rap. Let's face it, of all media categories, science fiction, as comedian Rodney Dangerfield would say, "Gets no respect!" Many take undeserved swipes at the "intellectual" aspects of science fiction movies and TV, not to mention real mockery some derive from branding sci-fi lovers - especially Star Wars or Star Trek - as geeks. Now one movie offers real respect to sci-fi fans. Avatar, from director and writer James Cameron, sparkles as the biggest grossing movie in Hollywood history. It's an action packed thrill ride, touching many narrative areas, but it's first and foremost a sci-fi epic. If there's a time sci-fi fans can hold their heads high up into the stars, it's definitely now.

Cameron is no stranger to science fiction. In fact, in many ways, he's not only the biggest movie director with Avatar under his belt, but he's now also the biggest science fiction film maker of all time. George Lucas, creator of the iconic Star Wars movies may still top the list of most fan boy's as the uber science fiction film geek of all time, and certainly Steven Spielberg with E.T. The Extraterrestrial and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind geeks out on that list too, but Cameron has definitely overshadowed them now as the most successful sci-fi director geek.

The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and The Abyss are all huge sci-fi movies crafted from the mind of James Cameron. Throw in Dark Angel, his big sci-fi hit TV show and now cinematic juggernaut Avatar and Cameron's a real science fiction film fanatic, who's also topped the box office charts with movies like True Lies, and of course the former biggest grossing movie in Hollywood history, Titanic.

So, my fellow sci-fi fans, rejoice! My science fiction loving lovers, you must totally revel in the success of Avatar. Celebrate the fact that the number one grossing movie of all time comes from the engaging, fascinating and mind bending world of sci-fi, the same world that's given us E.T. The Extraterrestrial, The Matrix, Star Wars and Star Trek. With Star Trek's blockbuster success last summer, and now Avatar, sci-fi fans can fairly brag that their hobby, their passion, their love has indeed touched the hearts and minds of the entire planet. They can also celebrate that one of their own now reigns as champ of Hollywood. When Cameron won the best director Oscar for Titanic he screamed out "I'm King of the world!" Yes, James, you are King of the Hollywood world - and you're also now the true sci-fi Geek King of Hollywood!

Guess you're right! Never considered myself a sci-fi "fan" but really got into Dark Angel before anyone else I know had even heard of it - and I do think Avatar was amazing. We saw it in 3D, then IMAX 3D and will probably want to own it when it comes out on blue-ray.

The only sci-fi I can really get into is the modern Star Trek - Next Gen and especially Enterprise with Scott Bakula. Dreadfully, most sci-fi is lost on me. I am too much a realist to suspend reality long enuff to enjoy the journey, and if truth be told, I have a hard time following along on the plots of sci-fi. I am just to wed to reality and history to suspend disbelief long enuff to get into sci-fi, but still, some of it - Terminator, etc., were awesome flicks.

Still haven't had any free time to see Avatar, and so want to! Ray Bradbury would be proud of Cameron. Another outstanding movie was Frank Herbert's Dune series, although the book was much better. As for sci-fi getting a bad rep, that's because t.v. is throwing so much low-budget junk into what they classify as sci-fi.

I saw the IMAX version six weeks after its release...still busy...fantastic visual experience. I'd see it again. If only the SyFy channel would take some direction from Cameron...their programming has pretty much devolved into wrestling, ghost hunting, and repeat after repeat of their awful made for TV movies. A shame.

    I can live with that!

This movie was awesome! Saw it in 3D which I highly recommend. Great article, Will!

I'm probably the only one who hasn't seen Avatar yet! Cheers.

Certainly sci-fi is becoming a lot more mainstream acceptable with improved graphics such as those used in Avatar.

Sci-Fi to me has always been dignified and respectful, but I appreciate what you've written here. Thank you!
