Avatar's Hidden Meaning and Hypocrisy

plane williams
A recent comment relative to my article Avatar's Hidden Meaning deserves to be examined. Here's the full comment...

Mr. Williams, It seems to me that you are licking the double-edged sword of hypocrisy to try and lengthen your forked tongue. I never knew something to be so powerfully true that it was left alone by anyone who opposes it and would do whatever they could to undermine it.

It is not a hidden meaning, but the actual meaning is that America uses its tax dollars to create revenue its sick thirst for consumer goods. More than once have we looked at the third world as our stuff that somehow got on someone else's land.

Corporations will then feverishly fuel the other side of the argument with the ideas we now hold today. Global warming, carbon emissions, and other hot topics that few will give a second look at to cover what the true cost of America's consumerism is.

It is not the planet we are wasting, but communities, and sometimes entire countries that get wasted. How well would anyone sleep at night knowing that a dozen or so people suffered and died for the very computer they have?

First of all, I stand by the article. A movie is a movie is a movie. Fantastic if someone puts a message in it; it's still a movie; an entertainment and a means for people to make money. Some producers/writers/directors put some of their money to good use-all are just people who support their family and buy stuff. James Cameron is no different.

Okay, the above comment- I'm a hypocrite with a long forked tongue-I'm working on it believe me.

Next paragraph...

The "actual" meaning of the movie Avatar is that America's tax dollars go toward satisfying its "sick thirst for consumer goods."

Granted, some people seem to have a sick thirst for goods; most Americans are shopaholics and will therefore never accumulate much wealth-just stuff that when we get old we'll give away and when we die our kids will throw away.

The question is; is America's consumerism "wrong?" If it is wrong what's to be done? Nothing in itself is "evil." A gun isn't evil, sex isn't evil, killing isn't evil, alcohol isn't evil and so forth. How and why those things are used or done is what makes them good or evil.

Goods and consumerism isn't going away. It's impossible; people aren't able to grow their own food, build their own shelters, and make their own clothes. As soon as neighbors begin trading with one another for things they're not able to produce themselves we have consumerism again. Who decides when enough is enough? Adolf Hitler? Joseph Stalin? The Pope? The President?

The idea of the noble native at one with the earth, animals, and sky is all very sweet and if you're a Bible believer you know it's how mankind was first created (Adam/Eve in Eden) but that time is long past. No natives since Adam and Eve have lived like the Eden couple. They've all traded, raided, and warred-all of them.

By all means we ought to be environment conscious and responsible. That ebbs and flows with every new industrial phase and new technologies. Even James Cameron used cameras, film, computers, chips, microphones, mixers, editors, and all the equipment and people necessary to make Avatar and all his other movies.

To quote from the comment above; how well does James Cameron "sleep at night knowing that a dozen or so people suffered and died for the very" equipment he uses to make his movies and millions of dollars? By the way; how did the above comment get to me? (A computer no doubt).

It's easy to judge history and to criticize people and policies. It's much more difficult to offer practical solutions and alternatives. We don't hear or read about those coming out of Hollywood. Of course not; Hollywood is for making money, providing jobs, and entertaining the masses.

If you're inspired by something that Hollywood produces and you want to make the world better-great-go help someone in need-run for political office-mentor an at-risk-kid-do something tangible for people.

(To the writer of the above comment I say thank you. I'll continue to think about what you wrote-you keep thinking too)

By the way, if you're a hard-core evolutionist-if you don't care for how things go in the world you should take it up with evolution; it's responsible after all-right? It did make us human beings didn't it or did we someone veer away from the plan evolution had for us?

Since I haven't seen the movie I really can't comment, but I thought you handled this very well.
    With Love,
