Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo: Product Review

Great Shampoo...But Is it Worth the Money?

Robert Borden
Up until recently, I have to admit that when shopping for shampoo, I would usually just buy the absolute cheapest product I could find at Target or Wal-Mart. I would never spend more than a few dollars on a bottle of shampoo. Conditioner, on the other hand, was a different story--a free sample of some hair conditioner from my local Aveda store got me hooked, and I thought nothing of spending $15 on a tube of Aveda conditioner. So, when I was at my Aveda store recently and I received a free sample of a new shampoo they had for men, I was excited to try it, but skeptical that it would be worth what it actually cost. Regardless, I took the Aveda shampoo sample home and decided to give it a try.

The next time I was in the shower, I almost forgot that I had received a sample of the Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo, but I remembered in just enough time to give it a go. The first thing I noticed was that the Aveda Pure-Formance shampoo smelled very good...unlike many of the store-brand shampoos I had tried. The Aveda shampoo was a little thinner than I was used to, so I had to use more of the product than I normally would to get an adequate lather to cover my scalp. The Aveda Men Pure-Formance shampoo did lather up nicely and felt very rich and creamy as I massaged the shampoo into my hair.

Next, it was time to rinse the Aveda shampoo out of my hair, which would be the true test of how good the shampoo was. I have thinning, fine hair, and most shampoos either leave my hair feeling too dried out or not clean enough. The Aveda Pure-Formance shampoo rinsed out of my hair easily, and it left it feeling clean but not dry, which I really liked. I could see using this shampoo on a daily basis, and only having to condition your hair a few times a week because the Aveda shampoo leaves your hair feeling moisturized.

In the end, I really liked the Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo, however at $18 for a relatively small bottle, it's not cheap. The product did perform better than store-brand shampoos, but I'm not sure it performed well enough to spend 10 times as much on shampoo. If I get a good deal on this shampoo, I'll use it, but I won't go out of my way to purchase this shampoo at Aveda like I do with my conditioner. I tried it and liked it - but there are products less expensive that, for me at least, are just as good - or better (with identical ingredients!)
