Avent: the Miracle Baby Bottle

B. Hummel
When I got pregnant I had many assumptions. One of the biggest assumptions was that I would be nursing my son for at least 6 months. After he was born, and it became obvious that my body was not going to produce milk, I had to face some harsh realities. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, you find yourself forced to scrap your original plan and go on to form a new one. It was my first lesson in learning to adapt as a mother, and it's certainly not the last.

So, after pushing aside the disappointment and self-recriminations I started the search for the perfect bottle. As often happens, none of the bottles that we had on hand were up to par. My son just flat out hated any nipple aside from the ones attached to the little ready-to-use bottles of formula given to us by the hospital, and since my husband and I were switching the baby to powdered formula I needed to find a bottle/nipple that my son would accept. After trying many brands I found the little miracle that is Avent. Avent saved us from the endless parade of bottle brands and the inevitable struggle involved in testing them. My son took immediately to the soft silicone nipples, which were very similar to what he was used to from the hospital. Avent bottles are a nice, chunky round shape that I find easy to hold onto, with a bigger than average mouth perfect for scooping in formula with one hand while holding a baby with the other, and the very clearly marked measurements (in both US and UK units) are extremely useful. Avent bottles are also great at reducing gas, equal to some of the more expensive and more complicated brands. They come in various sizes and various nipple speeds based on the age of the child, so they'll grow with my son.

I find the prices competitive with other popular brands, though perhaps a tad on the higher end. However, I don't mind paying a little more for the ease-of-use and the peace of mind, especially with the addition of BPA free bottles.

So, if you find yourself playing baby bottle roulette, even if you aren't milk production-challenged like me, try Avent and you'll most likely look no further.

I can totally understand the feelings of having to go formula when you didn't plan to. I had the same ones myself, for the same reason. I never did try Avent but one of my friend's did, and she loves it too!
