Average Day in the Life of a Mom with a 4-Year-Old

Sandy Steele
For those of you with 4-year-olds this may not come as a surprise that you hear random silly phrases that at first make no sense whatsoever. Then pondering for a moment what could have prompted such a phrase you realize what they are talking about.

Take yesterday for example, we are at a birthday party for a neighbor girl down the street. My son had lots of fun. They were playing with play-doh; the homemade kind; and I was sitting nearby when my son turns to me. He says, "You forgot the polish, Mommy."

I rack my brain thinking what in the world is he talking about. So, I ask him, "What polish, honey?"

He proceeds to show me by holding out one hand and with the other "painting" his nails. When he finished with one he did the other. Duh, polish. Fingernail polish. I don't normally wear it but one day last year he brought me a package that I had purchased for those "I need to look pretty" days and helped me put some on.

Who in our house wears fingernail polish that he would worry that Mommy wasn't wearing any? Grandma wears it; we live with her. He recently saw his 3 year old girl cousin have her Mommy put some on her toes. He has been exposed and now worries that Mommy isn't wearing any.

Then there are other times when you ask them certain questions and the answers are nothing you were expecting. For example, if I ask my son if he would like to do something that he has done before and he says, "No." Just no. No explanation. Then we as parents make the mistake(well sometimes it is a mistake, but other result in the best answer possible) of asking, "Why not?"

Lately, my son has taken to go off randomly in what I refer to (fill-in-child's name)babble. Sometimes it makes sense and for some reason I am drawing a complete blank on an example. So, now I am rambling!

Writing this reminds me of the TV show called, "Kids Say the Darnedest Things". What happened to that show? Did we really get tired of it? I think by now the kids that were on that show are about 10-12 years older than they were when they went on it. Some of us might not remember.

Whatever it is your children tell you, they sure are good for a laugh. Just don't laugh at them; laugh with them!
