AVG Anti-Virus Anti-Spyware Software Review

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben
In six years, I've gone from computer illiterate to repairing and maintaining my own computers. Everything I learned has been through trial and error. I've used many software programs. AVG Anti-virus software has given the best performance. In comparison the big names in anti-virus software: McAfee and Norton Symantec, AVG Anti-virus software is superior in two areas.

AVG does not conflict with existing pre-loaded software and utilities on my computer. McAfee Security Center downloaded its own firewall on my computer unnecessarily. McAfee's firewall conflicted with my pre-loaded firewall program. McAfee caused countless errors, system freezes that took me days to track down and repair. McAfee and Norton Symantec both also had spyware issues attached to the programs. These programs actually caused some viruses and worms to download on my computer. I have successfully used AVG anti-virus guard for a year now. I've had no problems using AVG. AVG has provided excellent anti-virus service with no system freezes or run-time issues.

The second thing that I like about AVG anti-virus software is that the basic edition is free to download and use. There are no fees. Both Norton Symantec and McAfee cost somewhere around $80 a year to use. When AVG upgraded their free program from AVG 8.5 to AVG 9, I was concerned that AVG might discontinue its free service. But I had already decided that even if there was a cost, I would pay the fee. My prior positive experience with AVG made me confident that AVG 9 would be equally satisfactory. This was the case. I've been using theAVG 9 anti-virus software for several months and am more than satisfied. And AVG anti-virus basic is still free to download and use.

After all the problems with Norton Symantec and McAfee, and before I discovered AVG anti-virus software, I had almost decided to forego anti-virus software and rely only on my anti-spyware software to keep my computer in good working order. Happily I chanced upon AVG anti-virus software. I have been a loyal user of AVG and will continue with the program. Make sure that you download the genuine AVG anti-virus software. Look for the four colored corners Windows logo; AVG uses the four colored corners, but that appear as ragged patches pieced together like a quilt. Click on the AVG website for more information and to begin your free download.

Thanks, Mar. So glad for all the good work you put into research, review and passing along to me, a "still illiterate'. What you learn I get to learn. What a way to go!

Great review Mar. I tried Norton and it wasn't catching any new virus's so I went to Kapersky.

Great review Marilisa! I quit using Norton after my first year expired. This is exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks! I will definitely be giving AVG a try now. Plus the fact that AVG is free is a bonus.

I don't know how McAfee and Norton are still in business. Each time I've used their anti-virus software, my computer was trashed. I've been using the free version of AVG for years and don't trust anything else.
