Avoid Bedbugs by Using These Tips

Abby Greenhill

Bedbugs are taking over the world, or so it seems! You read about them, you hear news reports about them and you cringe every time. Bugs creep you out, weird you out and disgust you. But with this problem on the rise, how can you avoid bedbugs if you stay at a hotel or motel? If you follow these tips you can avoid bedbugs and have a bug-free stay!

Tip #1 - Leave your luggage in the lobby until you have searched the room. Better yet, leave the luggage in the car until you check out your room.

Tip #2 - Inspect the bathroom first. Since the bathroom is where you are least likely to spot them, if you see any bedbugs in that room you can assume the rest of the room is full of the creepy crawlers.

Tip #3 - You're going to not love this one, but it is necessary. Pull back the bedding and check for small black dots or dried blood spots. Look under the mattress, under the sheets and behind the headboard.

Tip #4 - A bedbug is approximately the size of an apple seed. You should be able to spot one quite easily. If you see one, there are probably many, many more.

Tip #5 - Although bedbugs are mostly likely to be found in the bed or bedding, be sure to check around the area where the bed is location. That should include night stands, clocks, telephones and even books or newspapers. Don't forget the closet and dresser drawers. Are you starting to itch yet?

Tip #6 - A bedbug can travel from another room to your room. You want to keep your luggage up high, like on top of a dresser or on one of those metal folding luggage holders.

Tip #7 - If you find bedbugs in your room you need to report it to the front desk immediately. Ask for a different room at least 2 floors away and then check that room for bedbugs. If the staff won't give you a new room, or gives you a hard time, head back to the car and go to a different hotel or motel.

Tip #8 - When your vacation is over and you are back in the safety of your own home, be sure to wash all of your clothes in hot water. Bedbugs can't survive water hotter than 122 degrees. Be sure to use your vacuum cleaner on your suitcases, another safety measure.

Tip #9 - If you do happen to bring home these unwanted guests; you can't treat them yourself, unless you are a professional exterminator. You need professional help to destroy the little biting monsters. Call in the big guns to kill off the little pests.

Tip #10 - Remember, whether you stay at a 5-star hotel or a no-star motel, for vacation or a business trip, bedbugs don't discriminate. They have been found in all 50 states. Follow these tips and your vacation or business trip can be bug-free.

Have a safe and fun-filled trip and remember, don't let the bedbugs bite!

Just saw a show today about exterminating bedbugs from a guy's home in Florida. The infestation was so severe that the bedbugs and their eggs were visible by the hundreds on the curtains. The exterminators placed a envelope sheet on the mattress that sealed in any bedbugs inside the mattress to kill them by suffocation. The walls were spotted with bedbugs and bedbug fecal matter, which was steamed at a temperature of at least 140 degrees. The exterminators then placed the curtains inside a portable chamber heated up to 140 to kill the bedbugs and their eggs. Finally, the exterminator told the he would do follow up visits until all the bedbugs were gone.
