Avoid Fraud in Charitable Contributions

Making charitable contributions can be a very rewarding experience. For every cause there are hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations seeking your donations. Unfortunately, not all charities are run the same. Some actually spend very little on the cause you are trying to support. So, how do you weed through the quagmire of charities and find the one that will give you, and your cause, the most bang for your buck?

As with any expenditure, never rush into a decision. There are many high-pressure sales situations involved in charitable donation solicitation today. So, you must remember to take your time and research the organization before you make your decision. This may take some time. Reputable charities understand this and should assist, or even encourage, your inquiries. While those solicitors who try to push you to make a donation immediately are usually the ones who are more concerned with their quota than the cause.

One of the most important questions that you can ask of any charity is,"Where exactly is my money going?". The answers may surprise you. Administrative costs, including sales commissions, advertising, and payroll, can sometimes consume a large amount of each donation. Sometimes, this administrative cost is as high as ninety percent. Thankfully, not all organizations were created equally. Most do not waste such large amounts. And, many spend the majority of your contribution to your cause. So, make sure you ask this all important question.

Some of the shadier charities may try and pray on our human nature. Most of us have a desire to help others who are less fortunate. These organizations flood our senses with the sights and sounds of starving children, or, suffering animals. Picture after picture, and video after video, we are accosted by these horrifying sights. While we know that these conditions exist, this information does little to tell us the facts about the charity. This is sales through emotion.

A simple online search will usually provide a plethora of information about any charitable organizations. There are also many groups on the internet, and the telephone, who make it their business to oversee what various organizations are doing with contributions. The information is out there, if you are willing to do a little research.
So, go ahead and do a little leg work. Finding a reputable, honest charitable organization to make donations to is as easy as point, click, and read.
