Avoid Getting Stuck in Middle Management: Take What You're Given
Some middle-managers get stuck because they don't want to do some of the more unsavory tasks that are required of them. For example, let's say that you are asked to choose three employees to cut because the budget is running low on your project. No one likes to fire anyone, but if you refuse the job, you're adding at least another year to middle management status. Instead, take every job you're given with a smile and handle it as efficiently and as professionally as possible.

Another reason why you might be stuck in middle management is you've given your superiors the impression that you're satisfied. Everyone can't move up, so the executives up there on 18 are happy to overlook those managers who seem content. While you don't need to get beligerant about it, consider taking steps to show your superiors that you want to advance. Request more work, get everything done quicker and better than expected, and talk to executives at every opportunity.

Essentially, a middle-manager's job is to keep both the line workers and the top brass happy and content. With that said, take your job seriously. Not only should you be handing down orders and implementing procedures, but you should also be acting as an advocate for "the people". If they have concerns, issues, complaints or requests, take them to upper management. Show everyone that you can be trusted to get the job done and to iron out any problems that might arise.
Avoid Getting Stuck in Middle Management: Gather Information
One of your jobs as a middle-manager is to be on top of everything that's going on. This will also help you in your quest to move to upper management. Make it your business to know everything that's going on -- not only in your company, but also in your industry. Use that knowledge to present ideas to the brass and to answer important questions from your subordinates. Never be afraid to push the envelope, which is what they are looking for in upper management.
Avoid Getting Stuck in Middle Management: Take Some Innitiative
Some people get stuck in middle management because they are uncomfortable with their authority, and thus tend to downplay their role in the company. Make yourself a mover and shaker of your business, and put your hands in everything available. Try not to overstep your bounds, but you shouldn't be afraid to take risks and to forge ahead. Give yourself opportunities to show the brass what you're capable of.
