Avoid High Fees for Checked Baggage During Your Trip

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you have undoubtedly noticed the escalating prices and fees associated with airline travel. One of the areas that have soared in cost is in the checked baggage department. If you remember the days when you could travel with your luggage and it would not cost you an arm and a leg, do not fret. Here are some ways to cut costs and save money during your next trip.

The next time you fly, think about what you want to pack. Make a list of items you would like to pack. Think about the activities you will be doing on your business trip or vacation. You do not want to forget any items that are essential, but you do want to avoid any unnecessary bulk and weight in your luggage. Check over your list twice. If you are like me, you have a tendency to overindulge when packing. Let the Boy Scout or Girl Scout in you stay at home. While it pays to be prepared, do keep in mind that most items, if forgotten or needed unrepentantly, can be purchased readily where you will be staying.

Once you have narrowed down your packing list, decide if this will fit comfortably in the luggage you intend to take with you to the airport. Traveling with a simple carry-on is the easiest and simplest way to travel. If your luggage will be more than a carry-on bag, then it Is time to consider your options.

You may be surprised, but it may be cheaper to mail your items to your destination. If you will be staying with or near family or friends, mailing your clothes and necessities can not only save you money at the airport, but can be very convenient. Just think of how great you feel not lugging your bags through the airport. Upon arrival to your destination, you can meet up with your acquaintances and grab your goods. What a great reason to meet and have dinner together.

Before you leave your destination, drop by the local post office and mail your Items back home. You will arrive in plenty of time to get your clothes and other important items and again, you will be traveling light. A great tip is to insure your items just in case there is a problem along the way.

If you should decide that shipping your luggage is not the best idea, then it is wise to plan ahead. After packing your suitcase at home, weigh the bag and its contents on a reliable scale. A recent news report showed how inaccurate scales can be at the airport. If your bag weighs 22 pounds at home, you would be surprised to find that it weighs in at 35 pounds at the airport. If you note a large discrepancy between your estimated weight and theirs, you can request the bag be weighed on another scale. This tip alone can help to reduce your fees associated with checking luggage at the airport.

Carefully considering the items you are packing is essential when planning a trip away from home. Consider alternative choices to checking baggage at the airport. Check fees for mailing, returning, and insuring your packages, you may save money. WEIGHING ANY LUGGAGE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT THE AIRPORT IS A GREAT WAY TO CHECK FOR ACCURACY. Reducing fees for checked baggage can really help stretch your travel budget.
