Avoid Smashburger

You Only Get One Chance to Make a First Impression, Plus the Burger was Average

Please note: This is a commentary about my personal experience of trying to eat at Smashburger, not a review of the burger.

Earlier this week while driving down Colorado blvd., I noticed an new burger place, Smashburger. YES! Maybe a good burger place in Denver, where the cheeseburger was invented. At first impression I was a little skeptical, you need to fill out a card with options to add to your burger. A burger is a simple item. Have a few extras, but don't go over board, not at a fast food burger place. And NEVER offer a salad, even if you offer it with a hamburger patty on top.

The place had most tables full, and some people were waiting for to go orders. We waited in a line of 10 people, I handed my card to the nice lady at the counter, she then read me every item that I checked off. Why did I fill out the card? After being told that it was going to take 20 mins, and we accepted the ridiculous time frame, sat down. 20 minutes came and went, so at 30 minutes I start hearing other tables complain about being there for an hour. I was not going to wait an hour for a burger, maybe at the Apple Pan or In-N-Out. So I went up to see what the problem was.

There was an inexperienced manager, over complicated burger condiment station and far to complicated packaging for a burger. I asked the manager for the status of my burger, he said they were working on it, but my friend's burger, ordered on the same ticket, had not even been put on the griddle yet.

They had a serious situation going on and all the guy could say was that he was doing the best that he could. I even offered to help deliver the seven burgers that were just sitting there. Then I noticed my burger had been sitting on the counter the whole time. Turns out they prepare to-go orders ahead of the orders eating there.

Looking around that the swarming un-happy customers, I noticed six burgers actually being cooked. Why would that grill not be full of burgers? There are 20 people waiting.

Finally my friend just says he wants his money back. Initially tell us that they will not refund our money. Other people get upset and they end up giving us all a refund. At the same time the burgers are done and they just handed us the food.

So we leave, letting new customers know about the wait time, they turn around and leave.

Finally, I am starving, I get to sit down and eat my burger and an AWESOME blossom. Big patty, a little on the dry side due to the fact it was just sitting under a heat lamp for 20 minutes, with pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, pickles (best part), smash sauce. It was average at best.

Overall, the burger was a 5 out of 10. The service was unacceptable and the concept of high end fast food, salad, breakfast, burger joint that serves beer is a hard pull for me. I will see over time if they fix there problems and replace their current management if the place is successful

At the time of this publication, they have one location and one in the works.

Yeah maybe alittle over-whelmed with the new staff working together, went two seperate times and 2nd time the guy getting orders out from under heat lamps was a breeze, easy go for him. First lady tryin' couldn't handle the job and way too loud and condeming of her team, hope she moved on. Excellent burger like create your own haystack onions way too salty

So you're one of those people who constantly checks on the "status" of their order. Just sit back and wait. Maybe have a conversation or sip on a beverage -- you know, things people who aren't rude do. A well-cooked burger takes time. Combine that with the fact that this place was new, busy, and the entire staff were getting accustomed to the process, and any logical person would know it is going to take a while.

Sorry you didn't have the best time at Smashburger. It is the best burger in Denver by far. The reason they only have six burgers on the grill is to not crowd the grill, this slows the process down, and takes longer if you do so. If you want a fast burger, go to Mcdonalds and stop bitching.

Your review may have been your experience but the place serves the best burger I have had in Denver to date. I am happy to see it be successful.

Smashburger is a division of Quiznos sub,in which the franchisees are being indentured slaves to corperate, losing their lifes savings, and in one case brought to public attention, taking their own life. STAY AWAY FROM THIS FRANCHISE THEY NEED A MINIMUM NET WORTH OF 2-million,KEEP YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK> THEY WILL TAKE ALL OF IT JUST LIKE THEIR PARENT COMPANY-Quiznos.Just ask ANY Quiznos operator.
It's like a New car.Your old one(Quiznos) is put off to the side, and forgotten about.

I just get robbed by this place. They charge my card but never deliver my food. How it is possible to sell food that they can't deliver it? This place in la Jolla CA sucks and they owe me $23.00 plus my time. I also sent a complaint and never get a response

    Mr. Menu;

Thats to bad you had that type of a experience especially since the "Smashburger"concept started in Colorado by the owners of Quizno's.

But it really sounds like what you experienced is another attempt of these guys bringing a concept to market that will not work similar to Quizno's.

I might eat at one of these places...but certainly not own or be a part of the concept. It has all the makings of failure on it.

Just tried smashburger. Had the classic, an order of smash fries and haystack onions. Delicious. Definitely worth any wait, even though there wasn't a wait and worth every penny. AMAZING!!

Look - you complainers are nuts! These are great hamburgers, we went to Carl's Jr a few days later only to realize I will never go there again. Smashburgers are far better than those and they used to be favorites of mine. I like the hot baja burger - if you find one better let me know cuz I'd love to see it. PS the shakes were very good too.

Just tried them today, probably the 2nd best burger I've had in my life, jucy, delicious and worth the wait.
