Avoid Spring Gardening Mistakes by Following These Hints

Kathy Norton
By the end of March many people start getting that wonderful bug.. spring fever! The urge starts to hit on these sunny days to get out side and start cleaning up the yard and to plant some color into the dreary ground. Here are some helpful hints to help make your gardening this spring a success.

1. You need to make sure that the soil you are working with is not to wet and that the heavy frosts have ended. If you try to plant in soil that is to wet your plants roots will most likely rot. If you find that it is to wet you will want to raise the soil above ground by creating a bed. By doing this it will allow the sun to dry the soil out making it much better to work with.

2. The next thing you need to do is to figure out which plants are for cool seasons and for warm seasons. Your best choices for spring planting are ones that can handle the colder temperatures since you never know in the spring when there will be a cold snap. Warm season plants will grow better mid to later spring since colder temperatures will inhibit their growth or possibly kill them. Prim Rose, Sweet Peas and Bachelor Buttons are just a few of the many selections of spring flowers you can choose from.

3. To make it easier to decide on what plants you should use; check and see what weather zone you live in. Most seed packets and plants will have a weather zone map on them so you can see what area you live in. This will make you choice in plants much easier.

4. Another mistake is planting you plants to close to each other. Make sure to read how many inches and how deep to place you plant. If they are to close to each other they will crowd each other out causing the plants not to grow or die. If you place them in the dirt to deep they most likely will not grow.

5. It is always a good thing to fertilize your plants but many make the mistake of fertilizing too much or directly on the plants roots. This can case the plant to burn and die.

6. You should avoid watering too frequently or excessively so that the ground is always soggy. This can cause your plants to rot.

7. You should try to keep up on the weeds, if the get to big or to many this can cause your plants to smother and die due to over crowding.

8. It is very easy to get overly excited about the colorful plants you can choose from. Make sure you don't go over board and buy more plants then will fit in your garden area!

9. Another mistake is not tilling your garden bed and clearing out old weeds and leaves. It can really help your plants grow if they are planted in loose soil that has been arrogated.

10. Another mistake is not cutting the bottom out of the organic pots your plants come in. Even though it will sooner or later disintegrate, it is still better to open the bottom to allow the roots to grow.
