It's becoming that time of year again, when colds, flu, and whatever else is flying around making everyone sick. However, there are things that you can start doing right now to help yourself from getting sick during the cold season. Here are some basic guidelines.

1. Cut down on the sweets. Sugary food attacks your immune system and puts you at more risk of sickness. You don't have to completely stop eating sugar for the whole season, unless you want to. Just keep your intake to a minimum.

2. Get plenty of sleep. If you are overworking yourself and not getting enough sleep, you are extremely likely to wind up with an illness. Try to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

3. Eat healthy foods. Try not to eat a lot of junk food, and make sure you are eating fruits and vegetables that gives you all the proper vitamins and nutrients that your body will need to fight off any viruses. It's also not a bad idea to take daily multivitamins.

4. Meditate. Winter can be a very stressful time of year. Keep your stress down to a minimum by meditating at least twice a week. Even better, do this daily. If this is not your thing, do something that is destressing for you. It could be writing, going for a leisurely walk, listening to music, going out with friends, etc. Just make sure you are doing something every day that takes your mind of off the stress.

5. Work out. Staying active is important to keeping your body healthy and illness free in the winter. Just make sure that you are not overdoing it and give your body the proper rest is needs in comparison to how much you are working out. Also, if your job is physically demanding, you may want to count that as your work out. You don't want to exhaust yourself.

6. Communicate. Make sure you are aware whenever your spouse, friends, family, and co-workers is feeling under the weather, so you can stay clear of them while they are contagious. Ask them to let you know if they are feeling sick, and do the same for them.

Taking these precautions will help you be healthier during the winter, which will make you happier as well.
