AVOIDAL is a Flash-animated skill-based game created by Newgrounds.com user David W. Evans (HybridMind). Loren Schmidt and Joseph Mattleman were credited for excellent feedback in the in-game credits, where Tom Fulp is also thanked for sponsoring the game. AVOIDAL was submitted to Newgrounds.com on November 3, 2010 and is currently featured on the front page of Newgrounds.com. It also currently holds a score of 3.70 out of 5.00 based on votes by the Newgrounds community.

Gameplay

The objective of AVOIDAL is to destroy blue stars by attracting missiles and red stars towards them while dodging these attacks yourself. To attract a red star, simply move your red-colored avatar near the red star. The red star will now follow you around. Avoid getting hit by it. You can lead the red star towards a blue star, thus destroying both.

Note: running into anything on the screen will cause damage to your virtual character. The health of your red-colored avatar is shown at the bottom of the screen by a red bar. Running into anything or getting hit by anything will cause this red bar to decrease. Over time, the bar will recharge itself. When this red bar is completely diminished, the game will end.

Below your red health bar are a set of values that may be of interest to you. The first, located at the bottom-left hand corner of the screen, is your current score. The next item describes the difficulty of the current stage. The difficulty increases as you progress through the game. The next item is your streak count. Keeping this up will increase your score multiplier, which will result in higher scores. The final item, located at the bottom-right hand corner of the screen, is the current best score.

Another note: if you do not destroy blue stars, they will slowly turn white and explode, releasing shrapnel that can cause damage to your virtual avatar.

Here are a few keyboard shortcuts to possibly make your experience more enjoyable. Press S to mute sound, and press M to mute music. Pressing the Escape key will pause the game and open the menu. You can also press R to restart the game.

On the front page of the game, you can view your last score achieved, the highest difficulty achieved, the highest streak achieved, and the best score achieved. These scores can be submitted to an online leaderboard, where you can compare how well you played against other gamers around the world.
