Montrealers who have serious acne can get an referral from their family doctor for a dermatologolist in their area, or they choose to visit a private clinic and pay for the services rendered.

Before going to the doctor for treatment for acne, there are some basic tips that Montrealers can do to treat and/or prevent acne in the first place.

Shampoo

If you are prone to acne around your hairline make sure you keep your hair clean and shampoo often.

Harsh Cleaners

Do not wash the affected area with facial masks, astringents, or facial scrubs. These products can irritate the skin and make your acne problem worse You just need a gentle cleanser, such as basic soap and water.

Scrubbing the area

Do not scrub the area affected by acne, you will only irritate the skin.

Over the counter medication

Try over the counter medication containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to see if it works before visiting a doctor.

Stay away from skin irritants

Greasy products such as hair products, acne concealers, cosmetics, and sunscreen should be avoided

Caution: When it comes to sunscreen be cautious, your doctor will tell you if you should stop using it during the acne breakout. There are also some acne products that make your skin more susceptible to the sun's rays.

Your skin may have acne, but it is also vulnerable to cancer from the sun's ultra rays. You need to talk to your doctor to find out which acne and sunscreen products are best for you.

It is also important to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Water-based products

Instead of greasy products use products with a water- based content. You can also use products labeled noncomedogenic.

bjects that touch your face and skin

Be careful of what touches your face and skin. Your hair if dirty, cell phones, hats, sunglasses or clothing, even your hands can trigger a break out of acne because of the grease that can clog the pores.

Do not squeeze your blemishes

Your mother was right, squeezing or picking at your pimples can cause irritation and possible scarring.

If everything else fails, do go see a Montreal dermatologist.
