Avoiding Daily Work Distractions

Anyone who works from home or has their own business will know that sometimes, even if you are an especially focused person, you may have days where you will find yourself very easily distracted.

If you find yourself distracted on a regular basis you will inevitably find your levels of productivity dropping, this can lead to long nights and extra early mornings to complete work, and all because you felt the need to vacuum the lounge after your lunch instead of getting back to work.

Fortunately there are some ways to help train your mind away from these daily distractions. Here are a few tips you can try;

Create a home office - if you do not already have a home office and you work from the sofa or from your bed like many people do, try to set one up. If you have a spare room that no one sleeps in, push the guest bed to one side and dedicate one half of the room as your home office. Purchase a desk to put your laptop or computer on and keep anything work related in here instead of scattered across your home. Not only is this more professional but it also helps you to train you mind set into knowing that when you are in that room, you are at work, not at home.

Get a do not disturb sign - if you have children or a partner that is likely to come home and distract you whilst you are in the middle of a job, make a do not disturb sign and explain to them that when this is on display, you are in the middle of doing something important and you are not to be distracted. If you do not have a home office and have set up somewhere like the dining room table, the same should apply. All you need to do is prop the sign up, it can take effect anywhere in the house.

Plan your time - if you keep to a structured plan and designate times to have a break, go and eat and watch the news then you have little reason to get distracted. This method allows allotted time for the things that can distract you in the middle of you work. If you feel you will forget yourself and sit watching the TV and an hour has passed then set an egg timer, this will alert you when it is time to go back to work.

In conclusion, it is quite simple to train yourself in to controlling potential distraction if you think of clever ways to snap yourself out of it, or better still stop it before it even happens. By controlling it you will find that you become much more productive but you still have times when you can do the things that are on your mind.
