There are many forms of an unhealthy weight loss program. Before starting any diet plan, you should make sure that your choice is nutritionally sound ensuring that your body is getting the nutrients it needs and that your body is getting enough calories to maintain your energy daily.
Many weight loss programs promise dramatic results by instructing you to limit or abolish your intake of a particular type of food. An example of this type of diet is the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet instructs follows to limit or cut out all carbohydrates from their diet and eat large quantities of protein including meats that are high in fat. While this program will provide you with some short term weight loss, it is not advised to eat a diet which is high in saturated fat such as that found in bacon or sausage. In addition, limiting your intake of carbohydrates can sometimes lead to loss of memory or focus.
If a diet plan asks you to limit or eliminate a particular food or type of food, you should be very leery. It is important that your diet consists of a variety of foods in order to make sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs. When you eliminate or limit a food, you may be missing a key nutrient.
When trying to lose weight, it is imperative that you are burning more calories than you are consuming, but you should be concerned about any diet plan that instructs you to eat too few calories. If you are instructed to eat less than 1000 calories per day, your body will go into starvation and if this practice is done for a long period of time, it could ruin your metabolism.
When your body is in starvation mode, it uses muscle tissue to sustain energy which decreases your metabolism. If you continue to starve your body, it may even begin using the heart muscle for energy. When you go back to eating a normal amount of calories, your body will think it is getting too many calories and you will begin to gain weight.
Some diet plans ask the followers to replace meals with meal replacement drinks. When your body goes without solid foods, it does not function optimally. While on this liquid diet, you will lose weight, but when you have accomplished your goal and begin introducing solid food back into your diet, you may see the weight creep back. Additionally, when you are on a liquid diet, you may feel deprived and as you begin introducing solid food back into your diet, you may unintentionally overeat as a result of being "deprived".
When choosing a diet plan, you should always make sure the plan is nutritionally sound and does not jolt your body into an unnatural state. Eating foods that are low in fat, eating sufficient calories for your body, and exercising regularly is the best way to accomplish your individual weight loss goal.
