A&W All-American Food in Iron Mountain, Michigan - Restaurant Review

Richard Banks
In the remote location of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is a small town called Iron Mountain. Known more for its cold weather and blustery winter conditions rather than warm climate and summer fun, Iron Mountain is a city like no other. Within Iron Mountain is an all American restaurant, A&W All-American Food.

First Impressions

The first encounter with A&W All-American Food Iron Mountain, MI left me with little. Boarded up windows and tarps were visible, instead of a local eatery. But just like the beautiful butterfly, everything must come from humble beginnings. What I didn't realize is A&W All-American Food Iron Mountain, MI closes for the winter months due to the extreme cold.

When A&W All-American Food Iron Mountain, MI opened, I was taken back to the cruisin' days of the '50's. There was drive up stations where food and drink were ordered and delivered.

Wait Staff

As with most drive-in restaurants, service is a key component to the overall experience. The service was first class. Hands down A&W All-American Food offers the best service out of any restaurant in the area. Even though the service experience ends when your food is received, the servers are always attentive to all of the guests.

Dinner

There is a limited variety of food offering at A&W All-American Food. The menu consists of burgers, crispy chicken sandwiches/strips, Coney dogs/hotdogs, French fries, onion rings, and cheese curds. For dessert, ice cream cones, shakes, floats, sundaes, polar swirls, freezes, and limeade were offered.

If healthy eating is an option, A&W All-American Food would not be a restaurant of choice.

Pros

Great location

Great atmosphere

Great service

Cons

Not open year-round

Variety of menu

99% of the food deep fried

No healthy options

My Take and Thoughts

The only negative about A&W All-American Food is not directed toward the restaurant itself. If Iron Mountain has a long winter, A&W All-American Food opens later. The service overshadows the food. This aspect is good considering 99% of the food is deep fried.

A&W All-American Food in Iron Mountain, Michigan would be good for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but not for healthy dining.
