OMG...This has been soo helpful! Wonderful too, I remember stories from my grandfather about the meds they would put in the drinks...How amazing, smart too :) Thank you guys for letting us in on this nugget of history :)
I loved A&W growing up, especially from the stores up in the Midwest. I must disagree however about the recipe never changing. Our family would travel up the Lake Michigan dunes in the late 70's... every visit included purchasing a gallon of our favorite root beer. Then on distinct and unforgettable weekend the formula was different... with an almost licorice aftertaste instead of our creamy delight. Again and again we hoped this was just a bad batch but just as innocence was lost, so too our favorite brew.

As a child in the 50's, I remember A&W having a very distinctive taste like no other root beer. It was so incredible, you almost wanted to chew it. You could go to the drive-ins and get a glass one-gallon jug from A&W. In the 60's, the FDA began posting news reports about certain ingredients in different foods and cosmetics being potentially carcinogenic. Apparently A&W adjusted their recipe, as it never tasted the same after that period of time. Yes, as adults, our taste sensors change, but that was a very distintive taste I will never forget. I won't touch another A&W and all the other root beers taste generically alike.
I do so love the taste of rootbeer. Thank you for teaching me about this sweet beverage that I hope stays with us for even a longer time.
