Award Winning Wines of Pennsylvania

Although many don't think of Pennsylvania (PA) as a wine country, they should give the wines and wineries here a closer look. Some areas of the state have the climate and soil conditions similar to France. Because of the harsh weather conditions found in PA, wines made from French hybrid grapes are good choices. The state has the perfect conditions for Chambourcins, Sevyal Blanc, and Vignoles. It is hard to make a mistake when buying a PA wine directly from the winery. Winery owners take pride in their wines and well they should. Listed below are four award winning wines of PA and the winery where it can be found.

2008 Benigna's Creek Sunshineis a Vidal wine; it's an award winning wine. This wine is complex in flavor. Overtones of citrus, pineapple, and peach are found in this wine. The balance of this wine is perfect with its lingering nutmeg finish. This wine would be good with seafood, poultry or cheese meal. The wine is not available online but it can be purchased over the phone. It is available at the following locations. Hours vary by location; so call first so you aren't disappointed.

Pinot grigro would be an excellent choice at this winery. It is a very pale topaz. It contains hints of limon, pear and a touch of almond. This wine's complex fruit yields a wine that feels somewhat weighty on the mid palate but has a clean finish. The wine is available online and here is a second location where the wine is available:

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon from Calvaresi Winery is a rich well balanced wine. It has been aged for 11 months in new American Oak. Cherry and currants are its overtones. It yields an almost spicy finish on the palate. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon '07, they have additional award winning wines available at the winery.

Nissley Vineyards offers a unique red wine called Fantasy '07. It is a blend of Concord, Native American White, and White wines. It is a light sweet rosé colored wine. It has an intoxicating grapelike aroma. It is prefect for fresh fruit, dessert and cheese. Besides purchasing the wine at the winery and State Store, the wine is available at the following locations. Hours are set by the mall or shop where they are located. You will want to call ahead to check hours.
