Awareness: The True Self

Josephine Sheppard, MA, PhD, NHC
What does it mean to you to listen to your intuition? What about listening to spirit? What does the concept of a higher awareness mean to you? We have all probably thought about these in one form or another in varying times of our lives; perhaps inspired by traumatic events/life experiences, inspirational speakers or just our own seeking and insights.

The other question that may arise is- when do we apply intuition, the wisdom of spirit or our higher awareness? Some may even feel a sense of being disconnected or not really "in tune" with this aspect of their being; because the original question arises of what is it or does it really mean to each of us?

So let's begin by addressing that matter first. The simplest way to imagine the presence of spirit, intuition or a higher awareness is to recall about times when you discovered or realized you were observing yourself. Perhaps you might have even felt momentarily detached or beyond the regular incessant chatter of your mind or from that which you were perceiving as yourself -whereas you "observed" yourself simultaneously thinking certain thoughts and acting a specific way and probably speaking at the same time. Another way of looking at this, is scientifically (loosely defined) speaking, we have defined how the brain controls the body function as a whole (not negating some of the founded research as of late; just trying to reach a specific point in case). And that the brain tells the body what to do, even on "auto pilot", and as we do not have to consciously think inhale and exhale, to breathe. However, the part of "us", our being and essence that was not originally recorded as a functioning part or even existing -was that part that tells the brain what to do, when to do it or when to stop or start functioning; the navigator and the observer. This is our true self that we are attempting to bring your attention to at this moment. Now recognized/measured science can only identify this as energy (the most base or smallest or just indescribable form after everything is broken down; what is in between all & holds everything together within the "space" -essentially). Some even call this part of us, the noticer or observer, or simply, the "I am" of being; awareness/presence itself. It is this "space" that in essence formulates and holds any and all forms together as they are, even that which the formed molecular structures seem to come from. The part of our being that is and does connect us to everything else in that we share the same essence of foundational energy.

With that little bit of observation, lets move on to where we go from here. When to listen to this higher awareness and intuition, or when/why it applies to life or living.

The irony is we "tap in" to this truer form or expression of self more often than we may realize. A time we do so is in our creative moments, or when we have felt inspired. This means being in spirit; and/or being or taking direction from the all creating Source. Perhaps you may have experienced times when you had that "gut feeling" about an event or a person and trusted -then it transpired in that manner; and you were glad you trusted that feeling. That is trusting intuition or wisdom of spirit. Just in this awareness brings you conscious of it, so that you can begin to be more readily aware and trusting of your own being-ness.

Putting it into an exercised practice is to be aware of what you are doing, what you are thinking -to observe your "being" simultaneously, as a first step or perhaps doorway leading or pointing in the direction intended. When this part of you gives a "nudge" to not do something or you get the "gut feeling" something doesn't feel right, listen and follow through; the same as if it pushes to move forward. Doing so will make this internal connection stronger with your own intuition and knowing. Now, understand, we are not referring to the mind, when it tells you to do this or that, because it will experience some sort of self fulfillment or sense of being complete as a result of something outside of your being. The most basic sign of direction is when your emotions are creating uneasiness, upset, worry and anxiety, and then the direction you are taking isn't the best choices for you. When your internal feelings are calm, peaceful, and there is a sense of clarity or "rightness"-regardless of what is transpiring outside or around you -then this is the indication that your direction is the correct one. Remember, it is not the minds sense of "this is right", whereas, it has to make something or someone else wrong and then justifies it. It is the experience of goodness that is recognized as correct direction for your life in this moment, without the thoughts that must judge and criticize to attain a sense of right (that is only the limited ego mind that is trying to control you). Learn to trust this. Having inner peace will create outer peace, which is something no one ever regrets.

To assist a little more clarity, we will point out occasions when it is just the ramblings of the ego mind verses, you being yourself, or operating from a high consciousness or awareness. Understand that to rise above the mind or thinking, one becomes more alert, or conscious. You experience and express from a place or space of calmness, sense of peacefulness, clarity, love, respect, understanding, compassion and mercy. You function will a sense of already being whole or complete and even satisfied. Even during the life events that are unpleasant. For example a death of a loved one, even from a place of higher consciousness, you still experience that loss or grief. The difference is you can experience peace at the same time and you do not allow the mind to "feed the grief." It does that by its stories such as "oh, it is so awful and I cannot go on with this person," which of course you are still alive and life continues until it no longer is.

When the mind has possession of you and the way that you think, you will doubt, fear, feel incomplete and believe that to attain some thing, go some place or achieve some goal, that only then will you feel complete, whole, happy, satisfied or fulfilled. Unfortunately, the ego mind is permanently doomed to being eternally limited and never understanding that you are more than or exist beyond what it creates as an outside remedy to becoming complete, whole or fulfilled. This does not mean we do not continue to work, become educated for practical purposes or attain things, and so forth. What it does mean is that we are aware that these things, events do not define who or what we are, but merely that which we choose to experience, express with and participate in as the form in which they are; a function, a role, or form in which to enjoy, experience, explore and share. We no longer say this job or degree, being a parent, a winner/loser etc. defines me, thus as all things in life automatically change, therefore we then will not create disappointment, depression and believe we are incomplete or have less worth when any of these change or cease to exist in out life experiences. We may change what we are doing or not; and we will begin to do what it is that we are doing with a deeper sense, better clarity, along with being at peace with the moment vs. the minds version of "the only reason I am here now is to get somewhere else later and then I will be happy" way of living. Which you never arrive to that future place and if you allow the mind to create unhappiness and misery now with the senseless thinking as this -then you will be unhappy and miserable when you get to that supposed future point as well, because you have not yet realized that the only way to experience happiness doesn't come from some future event or thing outside of you -but is a decision to be present and aware with the only thing that is happening, whatever the events may be since those are ever changing, and see/experience the peace and happiness that already resides from within and just requires you becoming aware of it or yourself by just being in the time of what is.

When we are controlled by the mind, it tells us, "You'll never stop thinking" or "you can't be anything without this or that, doing this or that or achieving this or that." Even as you read here, the mind may even being saying "I don't believe this, it doesn't make sense." So that's fine, it is correct that the mind is limited, so it cannot perceive that which goes beyond the confines of the mind. Sure, it can analyze, criticize and dissect concepts. That is because it is only conceptual. To recognize the meaning we are attempting to point you towards you do not think in the limits of the mind; you observe, experience, are present, become aware, and notice all that is now.

Now, yes, for practical purpose to lead you to this doorway, you observe literally what is happening now, which requires no thought, per se'. For example, as you are reading this, you may be sitting on a chair and experience the sensation of it beneath you. You may have a drink sitting next to you and as you reach for the glass, take a drink, feel the liquid enter your mouth and travel down the throat; it requires no thought to do so; as you do so, you are aware of each movement, sensation as it takes place. No worry, conflict or "I must hurry up and move to the next moment." It just is and as you continue in this manner, even aware when the mind forms a thought, you do not have to allow it to possess you with its stories that say "this or that is awful, what am I going to do now or you aren't capable of this." You are aware, without the thought, that the mind is forming thoughts, however, it cannot be true, as you are present or aware that what is really transpiring in the moment is you are sitting in a chair and your eyes are following the words on the computer screen or piece of paper. Not big, or awful, or overwhelming, just is.

The mind may be saying, "oh, this is too overwhelming" and that's fine, the mind has its thought. You were clearly ready for this moment in becoming more aware and enlightened because you are here now. It is not often one develops the awareness to their Source of creation being ever present in an instant, some maybe, however, most it is a little at a time. Any awareness is good. As you continue, it becomes clearer and you are feeling better, a sense of calmness and peace more consistently, with greater clarity and alertness. "It is the listener within you, not the mind." (Quoting Deepak Chopra in a recent video.)

To bring you closer to this point be aware of breathing; each breathe. Ask yourself "am I breathing?" Then, without the thinking mind, just be aware, experientially or by sense perceptions, your breathing, as the air goes in and out, the chest expanding, muscles contracting and relaxing. You may notice the pause or spaces between each breathe, that come naturally. It is at that point the connection to the space or gap/silence, where all is held together, created and the communion with your Source is discovered. We begin to realize that life is a sacred journey and we are life. God created all.... And he saw it and said all that he created is good.

Your good is better; your better is blessed. Be blessed in your life journey. Namaste'.
