Food
With food, the grosser or cuter the better. Serving such things as spaghetti and Meatballs (of course calling it something Halloween based will help such as intestines and eyeballs) or ghostly sandwiches and chips of dead potatoes, whatever food you choose will be wonderful, just name is something ghoulish and you are on the right track!! Another great thing you can do with food is to make it an odd color!
Make green bread or orange lettuce (this can be done by putting the stem end of the lettuce into a bowl or glass of water with some paste food coloring in it (use paste because it is stronger than regular food coloring), for a few hours and presto the lettuce leaves should start to get an orange or whatever color tinge to them), or making other things of odd colors such as black bat cookies or what ever your imagination can think up! Just remember as long as it tastes good, teens will love it. You could even consider making your own homemade pizzas, with blue or green pizza dough of course!! (Just add food coloring paste to packaged pizza dough mix after it is mixed, before you set it to rise).
Decorating
With decorating, it should be fun and easy! Using colored crepe paper and streamers and balloons and other cute and scary decorations doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Many times some of the dollar stores or other discount stores have many very wonderful Halloween decorations at a much discounted rate. You could choose to make your own decorations as well. Black lights and strobe lights and other 'disco balls" are all also options, just remember what kind of ambiance you are trying to create and then decorate away and your party is sure to be a hit!
Music (and dancing)
Music choice can be quite a job to figure out. Since it is a Halloween party, you might want to consider using some Halloween songs mixed into your favorite music. If you are going all out and having a DJ to provide the music for your party, you might want to ask him or her to mix some of the Halloween songs in. (I realize most teens and parents aren't going to want the cost of a DJ for their party.) You may want to consider asking one of your more talented friends to do the DJ job for the evening, by making sure the music doesn't stop except when you are all ready to play your games and do other things that require hearing.
You also need to let that person know that they must keep the music to a level where the police are not called to your home to spoil your party! Sometimes Louder is NOT better. Some ideas of Halloween songs are: "Monster Mash", "They're coming to take me away", "Thriller". "Adam's Family theme song", "Ghost Buster's theme song", "The Munster's theme song", "The Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Flying Purple People Eater", "Jaws movie theme song", and there are many many more that you could use that would be scary to you! You might also want to have spooky sound effects playing as your guests arrive for the party. Haunted house noises are quite good at setting a mood for your party.
A few words on dancing. I am not sure if dancing is something that teens do at this point or not, but chances are that your teen knows (or you know,if you are the teen) how their/your friends are on the dancing issue. If you do decide to provide a dance floor for the evening's festivities, make sure that there is plenty of open space on a wood or other hard surface floor to dance on, since carpet is usually not real conducive to dancing, if possible.
Other possible activities for the evening could include some games. Teen Halloween games could include things like: bobbing for "Baby Ruth"candy bars (yes they do float!) you could see if you can find some other candy bars that float as well, the prize here is the candy bar! (and if you think about it, it is pretty Halloween-ish or gross!!). Or you could play "guess what it really is" (not sure what a real name for this game is, but this name seems appropriate).
You peel some grapes for eyeballs and put into a bowl (obviously you must hide these items until you are ready to play the game), and you could use red gelatin desert (such as "jell-o") with some fruit in it to add to the confusion, and call it brains, in another bowl you might want to try, may be corn flakes called leprosy scabs, I am sure you can come up with other items for them to guess as well and name them gross Halloween names. The key is to make them things that will be hard to guess.
In addition to this when each person gets to guess, make sure you blindfold the person before taking them into another room to guess the items, you might even want to get your mom or dad or even an older sibling to help you by being the 'game coordinator' on this game, they would probably have a ball, grossing out your friends! Then as the guests guess each item the game coordinator will write the person's name on a sheet of paper and then write down how many each person got correct and then the winner is the one who guesses the most, winning a prize.
Another game that you could play, I call the toilet paper game. You split everyone into two teams, and each team is given a roll of toilet paper. The teams line up front to back. Each team then takes the toilet paper roll and must put the toilet paper up and then down through some item of each person's clothing, if everyone is wearing a costume this can be really fun, and the hard part is this: The first person in each line, the paper must go up and then down through the clothing item, the next person in line, the paper must go down and then up, and so on alternating through the line to the end. The first team to finish wins, but if there is an error in the winning teams line going up instead of down first, then the other team wins, unless that team has an error and if that is the case, the game must be replayed. You could even use Halloween decorated toilet paper!
Other Activity Ideas
Another thing you could do with your guests, if you think the game thing will not fly, is to watch a bunch of scary or Halloween movies. You could watch "Rocky Horror Picture Show", (IF the teens are old enough for this to be appropriate)and if that is something that you and your friends would enjoy. (If your parents are the type to allow you to watch this, be sure to ask first), They might even want to join in on this cult classic film.
They might even be able to teach you a line or two on this movie. If you do not understand what I meant by that, you might want to look it up, or ask your parents for their information on that one! If this movie doesn't suit your fancy, you could get some of your favorite horror films, or other scary movies and have a movie night for the evening. I realize that this is going a completely different direction than the games and dancing and music ideas, but there are teens of all types and having a dinner and movie party can be just as exciting as a music and games party.
Something else you could do as a 'game' if you chose this type of party is to watch the movies yourself, first, and write a bunch of questions on a sheet of paper for each movie. After the first movie, spring it on your guests that you are having a "pop quiz", then give them a copy of the quiz that you made up for that movie, and give them a set amount of time to finish the quiz, I would say 20 minutes tops, so you might not want to make the quiz too hard.
Then watch the next movie, and then give out the quiz. After watching all of the movies and doing all of the quiz's whoever gets the most correct answers wins a prize or is just the winner, depending on how you want to do it. If you would like to be able to participate in the game, get your mom or dad or older sibling to write the quizzes and decide the winners!
Your party is only limited by your imagination. Have a good and safe Halloween party. Parents can be very useful in planning parties and thinking of cool Halloween ideas, after all they were teenagers at one time too.
