"The Black Stallion"/"The Black Stallion Returns"
These popular movies are based on a book series, "The Black Stallion" by Walter Farley. "The Black Stallion" movie is based on the first novel in the series, and "The Black Stallion Returns" is based on the second novel in the series. "The Black Stallion" chronicles the relationship between a wild, seemingly untameable black horse and a young boy who seems to be the only one who understands the horse. The series has a number of horses in it and makes a great read for any fans of horse movies and stories.
"Black Beauty"
"Black Beauty" chronicles the life of a horse in England. The horse encounters many owners throughouts its life, and is subject to many levels of kindness and cruelty. Though this movie is rated G, there is some violence so it is not recommended for young children who are sensitive to alcohol and violence in movies. Though this movie is entertaining, stark fans of the book series by Anna Sewell may be disappointed in some of the liberties taken with the story in the film.
"Casey's Shadow"
This 1978 movie starring Walter Matthau is the story of a young boy, Casey, from a family that trains race horses, who befriends a disadvantaged horse named Casey's Shadow. "Casey's Shadow" is an inspiring horse film that is appropriate for all ages, and adults will enjoy Matthau's performance in the film.
"The Neverending Story"
Though the movie does not center entirely around the horse, "The Neverending Story" contains a harrowing and emotional scene with one of 80's cinema's great horses, Artax. Artax is the noble steed of the fantasy hero of the film, Atreyu, portrayed in the film by actor Noah Leslie Hathaway.
Horse movies often have drama and strife in the form of animal cruelty, injury or death, so if you have a sensitive youngster, it may be best to watch horse movies first before showing them to children so you can be prepared to discuss sensitivities. Previewing family movies before letting kids see them is also a good way to avoid mishaps with respect to misunderstandings about the content in the movie.
