Ayurvedic Herbs to Promote Kidney Functions

The kidneys are the major part of the urinary system. They function to remove waste, toxins and excess fluid through the urinary tract by way of the urine. They help to regulate blood pressure, maintain fluid balance and produce red blood cells. Proper functioning kidneys are vital to life. Natural herbal remedies are sometimes recommended by Ayurvedic herbalists with their supervision to treat kidney conditions or to maintain proper kidney functions.

Tulsi

Tulsi or holy basil works to increase the strength of the kidneys. Stronger kidneys work more efficiently to filter and excrete urine through the urinary system. According to Ayurvedic.com, tulsi leaves juice taken with honey daily, over a six month period will help in the passing of kidney stones through the urinary tract and into the urine.

Heena

Heena or Mehndi is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to expel kidney stones. The bark of the heena tree is used to make a decoction. The recipe according to, Ayushveda.com, consists of 20 parts of water mixed with the bark and boiled down to a forth of the original volume. Ayurdvedic.com website, recommendations are to take 20 to 30 ml of this decoction two or three time daily based on the severity of the pain being experienced.

Ajmoda

Ajmoda is the ayurvedic name for the celery. Celery is used as a preventative approach against developing kidney stones. Celery taken regularly in the diet will help to prevent minerals from crystallizing in the urine and stave off the development of kidney stones.

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terristris another ayurvedic herb was used by the Greeks for its diuretic effects of increasing urination and for lifting the spirits. This herb was highly respected by the Chinese for treating the liver, kidney and conditions like urinary tract infection and kidney stones.

Dandelion

Dandelion is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a diuretic which increases urine production.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, health care providers use dandelion leaves to support the functions of the kidney. To avoid drug interaction discuss the medications you are taking with your physician before using dandelion leaf.
