Azureus is a Java based BitTorrent client, meaning that it will run on any OS that supports Java. If you want to download and start using Azureus for yourself, you are going to want to make sure you have a recently updated Java Virtual Machine on your computer.
The Azureus client is a real powerhorse, easily handling as many downloads/uploads as you could ever possibly want. The interface is very simple to use and can be picked up easily by anyone. It offers quite a bit of statistics and information on both your downloads and uploads, along with advanced statistics giving you information on each individual file's progress, a peer map showing where in relation to yourself you are downloading from and uploading to and much, much more.
Azureus is the most popular BitTorrent client, and with good reason. It is the fastest client out there, and has more options and features than any other program you are going to come across, all with a simple, easy to use and intuitive graphic user interface. Its popularity also makes Azureus even more functional, as it is easier for it to pick up on nearby Azureus peers for even faster downloads.
For those who want to add even more to the already full-featured Azureus client, Azureus includes an excellent plugin functionality. There are many plugins out there for Azureus, including the very useful Ono plugin (Ono improves Azureus's ability to find nearby peers and give them highest priority, providing even faster downloads). Plugins are added without changing the base client so installation is a snap.
The biggest problem with running Azureus as your BitTorrent client is if you have an older machine that just doesn't have the power to run the program. Like all Java Virtual Machine run programs it does eat into your memory and if you don't have a fast machine it is going to slow down your computer quite a bit. If you are running on a slower machine you might want to use µTorrent (AKA uTorrent), which is an excellent BitTorrent client also and uses much less processing power.

"azu is a resource hog"
Sounds like someone didn't bother READING how to properly configure the application for his system.
Additionally expecting NEW software on OLD hardware to function as well as NEW software on NEW hardware is patently irrational. Upgrade your hardware or continue using OLD software.
Azu consumes no more than 70 megs on my system. Compare that to the baseline of 85 megs consumed by firefox.
Plus I don't have to tolerate crap clients or barely-sharing peers with azu. microTorrent only has IPA banning.
Azu, even Vuze, is delightful when properly CONFIGURED.

People complain about it being a resource hog, but hey, that's what you got to sacrifice for a power house like Azereus.
That powerful, feature-rich ==> bloated resource hog is a really damaging misconception. CAREFULLY recode Azureus in C/C++ (or some other natively compiled language) and you get the same power and features without the brachiosaurus-sized footprint.
I've been a loyal Azereus follower for 4 years now. And still going strong. People complain about it being a resource hog, but hey, that's what you got to sacrifice for a power house like Azereus.
