B60 Keurig Special Edition Brewer: Coffee Maker Review

Limitless Variety at the Push of a Button, and Without a Mess!

David Leavitt
I love coffee, however I'm very picky when comes to how I like it. While I'm not the only coffee drinker in the house, I tend to enjoy specialty flavors that my loved ones dislike. Brewing an entire pot of coffee just for one cup is a waste. The end result is that I end up stopping somewhere before work to order coffee - at the expense of time and money. Additionally, every so often whenever I go through the drive through the ladies at Dunkin Donuts tend to screw up my order - leaving me cranky throughout the rest of the day. After researching products, I discovered Keurig's single serve coffee brewers. After inquiring with the manufacturer, the good folks over at Keurig were kind enough to send me the Keurig Special Edition Brewer (Keurig B60) to review.

What it does
The B60 Keurig Special Edition Brewer brews cups of coffee in under one minute, and in three sizes: 6oz, 8oz, and 10oz. The B60 Keurig Special Edition Brewer also features a large 48oz. water reservoir so that there is no need to add water every time you want a cup of coffee. There is also a digital clock, auto on and off, and the ability to set a specific temperature. A removable drip tray makes cleaning the Keurig B60 a breeze.

Using the Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewer
Using the Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewer is incredibly easy. With a full tank of water, all one needs to do is turn the coffee maker on. When the Keurig coffee machine says that it is "READY TO BREW", simply lift the Keurig brewer's handle, to insert a K cup, lower the handle, and press the blinking light that corresponds to the size of your cup.

The B60 Keurig Special Edition Brewer allows you to enjoy coffee just the way you like it
One of the greatest things about the Keurig B60 coffee maker is that it allows you to enjoy your coffee just the way you like it. The K cups come in bold, regular, and light strength varieties. The extra bold K-Cup has an additional 30% extra ground coffee inside compared to the regular K-Cups. Choosing to brew a smaller cup will also yield a more intense flavor than the medium or large cups, allowing you to get just the right boldness.

The Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewer offers Limitless Variety
Keurig has paired up with over fourteen different coffee companies to offer over 200 different flavors of gourmet coffee to choose from. There is even tea and hot cocoa. Green Mountain Coffee, Diedrich, Gloria Jean's, Timothy's, Vanhoutte, Tully's, Coffee people, Newmansown, Caribou Coffee, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Bellaccino, Emeril's Gourmet Coffee, and Twining's round out the coffee companies that have partnerships with Keurig to make K-Cups for the Keurig B60 coffee maker. You can view all the different varieties here.

Keurig also offers an accessory called the "My K-Cup" that allows you to use ground coffee from another source in Keurig coffee makers.

Keurig sent me the Celestial Seasons Team Sampler, Tully's Coffee House Collection, Coffee People Variety Pack, and the Green Mountain Flavored Sampler. Each box had 24 K-Cups with four (or more) different flavors inside. A few of the flavors I enjoyed were the Green Mountain Caramel Vanilla Cream, Coffee People, Wakeup-Call, Tully's French Roast, and the Green Mountain Hazelnut K-Cups. I'm not a tea drinker; however my roommate told me that she loved the Celestial Seasons Green Tea.

Cleaning the Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewer
Cleaning the Keurig Special Edition Brewer is a breeze. The removal drip tray slides right out of the coffee maker and the metal holder detaches when turned upside down. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser, then there's a good chance you know the drill.

Using the Keurig Special Edition B60 Coffee Maker Will Save You Money
The It B60 itself has an MSRP of $139.99, and this is in line with many other high end coffee makers made by other companies. The B60 Special Edition is actually Keurig's mid-range coffee maker. Keurig offers two cheaper coffee makers for those who may be on a budget, the Elite for $109.95 that has a water reservoir, and the Mini Plus for $99.95 which is perfect for small spaces. There are also several more expensive higher end Keurig coffee maker models to choose from as well, all of which can be viewed on their website Keurig.com.

For those who always find themselves purchasing coffee on their way to work, the Keurig B60 can easily save you hundreds of dollars a year. The average coffee from Dunkin Donuts costs between two to four dollars. If you typically purchase a coffee a day, you are spending anywhere from $60 to $120 a month and $730 to $1460 a year on coffee.

The typical K-Cup box has 24 K-Cups for just $13.95, meaning each cup of coffee will only cost fifty eight cents. Department stores like Macy's and JC Penney often carry boxes the more popular flavors and regularly have them on sale for $9.99, making the cost forty one cents. That means a cup of coffee a day for a month will cost between $12.30 to $17.40 a month, depending on if you purchased your K-Cups when they are on sale or not. Compare this to the $60 to $120 a month spent buying coffee each day while on your way to work.

Personal Opinions
The B60 Keurig Special Edition coffee maker has quickly become the most used kitchen appliance in my house, other than the refrigerator. Everyone in my family has loved it, and uses it for making tea, coffee, and hot cocoa. It is a fantastic tool for entertaining when company is over, as every guest can choose from different flavored coffee, have it just the way they like it, and prepared within minutes. Leaving the K-Cup chamber empty I've also used the coffee maker to boil water for oatmeal and ramen noodles rather than using the microwave.

In the two months that I've had the Keurig B60 Special Edition Brewer, I've saved over $150, which is more than the price of the coffee maker itself. Because I've used a travel mug, I've also reduced my carbon footprint by not having to throw away Styrofoam and paper cups - making the Keurig B60 coffee maker an environmentally friendly choice. Knowing that my decisions have had an impact on the environment has given me pride.

Between the large amount of savings and variety offered by the Keurig B60 Special Edition coffee maker, I would recommend it to anyone who is a coffee drinker. For households that have varied tastes, or those who just want to drink one cup of coffee exactly how they like it, the Keurig B60 is the way to go.
