Babby Bottle Safety: BPA Free Does that Mean Safe?

Mellissa Withers
I am the mother of 6 beautiful children ages ranging in age of 18 down to 3 months old. There is a ten year gap from the newborn and her youngest brother. Needless to say having a ten year gap between the youngest two is crazy. I don't remember worrying about all the things that I'm now worried about. Now we get the whole BPA Free issue. Now companies want to say that when something is BPA Free it's all great and safe, unfortunately this is not the case.

I just had the issue with some baby bottles I decided to use. They promote right on the bottle BPA Free. I had been using the bottle a few weeks when it fell off the counter and struck my tile floor and cracked. I could not believe it but I wrote it off since it was a break at the seam of the bottle maybe it was just a bad bottle, it happens. Then the second bottle falls off the railing of the stairs and a shard of this plastic goes flying across the room. Now I'm worried. I can see the problem of my little girl in a few months will be crawling around my tile floor and bang her bottle on the floor and put one of these shards in her mouth, that is scary to me.

So I contact the company, and received an email that said " BPA is a raw chemical found in some plastics to help add durability to resist breakage. The decision to eliminate BPA was made by Evenflo do to controversial studies recently conducted by independent facilities." Why was no one told about this issue? I mean I heard that BPA was bad but I never heard that we should watch for brittle plastic when it says BPA free.

So what's a parent to do? I finally went with a non clear bottle with the BPA free. I would have choose glass as it's the most hygienic and chemical free however with my tile floor not very practical. I just will have to deal with the non clear bottles. I have even tried those bottles with the inserts but I don't have the money to waste on the liners each month. With 6 kids we watch our budget tightly. So my suggestion to all the parents out there, get informed learn all you can about this issue. Keeping your kids safe is paramount.
