we tap their door open,
check they breathe,
check their foreheads,
sigh with relief,
they haven't strangled
haven't drowned in their spittle.
We've chased the cat away,
retrieved their bottle or binkie,
rinsed it clean of fur and let them suckle,
checked their diedi, thankful its dry,
and find their cheek smooth,
feel the clasp of their fingers,
find the moon of their lashes dainty.
When they howl with anger
when trapped in crib
or beg for a drink of water
time and time again,
or drop their bottle for us to fetch
or rub their eyes and tell the truth
whine "I'm scared".
How do we answer, so are we?
So are we.

Thank you for your comment on my site.
How cute! It gives me baby fever- I don't have any kids, and don't know how this feels...
I remember just watching my daughter breathe in her crib... counting the seconds between breaths and giving her a poke if I though it was too long... she's 13 now and I still sometimes just watch her breathe- and am grateful for every one!
This is so sweet! And true, I have a 5 month old. I just sit and stare at him sleeping every morning before I head out to work!
You beautifully captured a situation any parent can relate to. Especially loved the image, "moon of their lashes," and could feel those sweet baby fingers clasping mine.
Perfect!
Awww...precious!
Sound like a doting mother. Very nice
Fantastic! I was the most nervous mother ever....this poem describes motherhood perfectly!
I can't tell you how many times I held my finger under my babies' noses while they slept.
