If you are a baby boomer out of work or one who may have retired early and decided to return to the work place but are having one heck of a time getting past the interview stage you are not alone. The fact is where workers over 50 have the education, experience, and discipline needed to meet the demands of companies today, fewer are actually making it past the first interview. It may be that you may have to retool your job skills in order to find a job in such a tough economy in order to compete with younger competition.

Baby boomers retiring between the ages of 50 and 55 that are choosing to return to the work place are going to have to create a niche in order to be marketable. Unless you are a in a field with a license where you can free lance your work after retirement retooling job skills and talents is most likely necessary in order to be considered.

Most baby boomers are very much in tune with technology making that the least of concerns. One of the key issues among employers is when older candidates indicate their salary preference in line with their experience and education. As older candidates is this an automatic black ball? Most employers can hire younger workers right out of college at a lower salary. This means the older worker seeking employment is going to have to make him or herself stand out in a unique way.

The other option for baby boomers is to follow the dream that you never had the opportunity to because of responsibilities. Many baby boomers retooling job skills in our tough economy are entering areas they once only dreamed of such as new writing careers, opening flower shops and businesses that were original hobbies turned into businesses, as well as marketing an area of expertise with a fresh approach. Consulting is also lucrative for older workers with niche areas of expertise. Other baby boomers are finding part time work in fields never considered while still supplementing their incomes. If however you are unable to find the work of your choice by all means return to the classroom. Many junior colleges offer inexpensive classes in a variety of fields that can easily parlay into a new career. Retooling your job skills and areas of experience can make the difference in the worker over 50 finding a new career.
