Baby Booties Crochet Pattern

Newborn Crochet Booties Using Bernat Frenzy Yarn

Phebe A. Durand
What good is a newborn blanket if there aren't booties to match? I couldn't leave it be - but the problem was that all the bootie patterns I found were so confusing that I couldn't do a thing with them. To make matters worse, I was determined to use the Bernat Frenzy yarn that I got at a great deal - this stuff is so soft it's like working with feathers. Made of nylon, acrylic, polyester, and more than 20% alpaca and mohair, there isn't a more beautiful-feeling yarn out there in my humble opinion. It's slightly thicker than a lot of baby yarns, though, so most of the super-confusing baby bootie crochet patterns were made impossible because of it.

So, I decided to set out on my own and do a version of booties myself.

You'll only need to know how to chain, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch to do this pattern. The color used in the picture is "black blast", but there are dozens of colors available - one ball of Bernat Frenzy (1.75 oz.) will make two booties with just enough left over that you can have an oops or two. Lastly, you'll need a size F crochet hook.

The blanket shown in one of the pictures is a color variation of the Southwest Touch Baby Blanket pattern I created, also available on AssociatedContent.

The Baby Booties Pattern

Chain 15 (17 for larger booties)

Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (13 sc - or 15 sc for larger size)

Rows 2-16: Single crochet in each single crochet across. Do not chain at end of row. Turn and single crochet across.

Form Leg

Do not finish off. Mark your last stitch, and fold the rectangle so that rows 1 and 16 match up. Starting with the last single crochet made, slip stitch in same stitch and in 6 more stitches (7 for larger size). Mark last stitch.

Using the tail from beginning crochet, draw opposite side (the heel) together and knot tightly.

Return to marked stitch. Chain 3 and double crochet in each single crochet around leg (the "open" area). Join with slip stitch. Repeat twice.

Close Toe and Heel

Turn bootie inside-out. Join yarn with a slip stitch at bottom of heel and work your way up to the leg joining using slip stitches. Finish off, fastening tightly.

The toes will be "flat" - joined horizontally instead of vertically as the heel was. Join yarn with a slip stitch at one side of toe and slip stitch in each stitch across. Finish off and fasten tightly.

The leg of these booties can be left "long" and a bow weaved through near the top, or it can be folded once over.
