- CHANGE DIAPERS FREQUENTLY: While there is no right answer for how frequently you should change baby's diaper it is recommended by most that every 2 hours is good enough for newborns unless of course they have pooped. That needs immediate change. For 6 months or older it's a good idea to keep checking every 2 to 3 hours if they are awake and every 4 hours in the night.
- WIPE DURING EVERY CHANGE: Whenever you change baby's diaper you should wipe the area even if its not dirty. Wiping with baby wipes especially unscented helps keep it clean and bacteria free. Unscented wipes are better because usually the ones which are scented have harsh chemicals which are hidden behind the scent and that cause skin irritation. For more sensitive babies use soft was cloth and warm water to wipe.
- DRY AFTER WIPING: Whenever you wipe baby's diaper area for changing make sure you dry it before you put on the new diaper. It is important because if left wet the bacteria causes skin irritation and it results in a bad rash. You can dry it by leaving it open for a while and then make them wear diaper. Another way is to use a blow dry with setting on cold if you want it quicker.
- APPLY VASELINE AND /OR BABY POWDER: When it is cold apply light coat of baby powder followed by Vaseline or similar baby cream preferably unscented and when its hot and sweaty dab a generous coating of baby powder before putting a new diaper. Use a cotton ball to apply powder as applying directly might result in baby inhaling the powder dust.
- NO DIAPER TIME: Whenever it is possible try to make sure your baby has no diaper time at least for half an hour everyday.
- IFRASH APPEARS ACT IMMEDIATELY: Sometimes rash appears if you forget to check and baby remains in dirty diaper for long. Act fast. Do not use wipes even if it is for sensitive skin and unscented. It irritates skin more if you wipe on the rash. Wash it with warm water using a soft wash cloth and try to give baby a warm water soak. You can do this by filling baby's bath tub with warm water and let the baby sit in there for about 5 minutes. Wipe it lightly with soft cloth by dabbing. Apply little powder and let baby have a no diaper time for about half an hour if you can. If not, then you can let him wear the clean diaper but change more frequently.
- HOME MADE DRYING POWDER: Another popular way of dealing with it is using burnt flour. In an ungreased pan put a handful of flour and on low heat toast it by moving constantly. Once it starts smelling toasty and appears little burnt remove from heat and let it cool. Apply to baby's butt. It acts as a baby powder and absorbs excess moisture and helps in healing.
- IF RASH IS MORE: If you follow the above steps then your baby will not have rash. If due to any reason like changing late it is still there then follow the above mentioned steps and repeat it as often as required. When rash is more then the best bet is to follow above steps for warm water soak and use a mild soap as well. Dry it and leave it open and have no diaper time for a while. Bacteria grow in moist environment, leaving it open for a while does not give it a chance to grow further. Then apply little rash cream like Desitin or Aveeno baby rash cream and put a clean diaper. Apply the rash cream only if the rash is more.
Skin wetness for a long period of time is by far the most common reason for diaper rash. Keeping it clean and dry is the best thing you can do. But sometimes even after following all the above mentioned steps these diaper rash still does not go away. If its not improved and getting worse even after 72 hours then it is not a normal rash and might be skin eczema or some other skin infection which needs a doctor's attention. Go see a doctor as this is best for your baby and you in this situation.
