Baby Dolphins Still Dying in Gulf

A Letter from National Wildlife Foundation CEO, Larry Schweiger

Megan Myers
One year after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, baby bottlenose dolphins are dying in the Gulf of Mexico . Please donate today to help !

This year, 145 dolphins - almost half of them infants - recently washed up dead along the coastline in four Gulf states . That's roughly five times the number normally found in the region!

Scientists don't yet know whether or not these
deaths are a result of last year's tragic oil spill.
But this much is certain: large quantities of oil
still remain in the Gulf of Mexico
, and wildlife is
still suffering
.

Here's what we do know about the recent
dolphin deaths:

  • The dead infant dolphins would have been conceived shortly before or during the spill.
  • The environmental health of the Gulf is in
serious decline. The spill further stressed
habitats that marine species like dolphins
    rely on.
  • The oil spill, through exposure to toxins,
could make dolphins and other wildlife
more vulnerable to disease or starvation.
These same toxins could also inhibit
    successful reproduction.
Donate to National Wildlife Federation® today to protect the habitats dolphins and other wildlife need to survive. It's critical that, together, we act now.

Here's why: BP is back-peddling on their promises to restore the wild places impacted by the oil spill. Without ongoing restoration efforts, what will happen to the millions of animals that rely on the delicate habitats of the Gulf?

At NWF, we're not waiting to find out. We're still on the ground in the region, working to ensure wildlife populations are on a pathway to recovery and that the environmental health and integrity of the Gulf ecosystem are fully restored.

But we need your help to get the job done! Please,
support NWF's vital wildlife-protecting programs in
the Gulf and across the country
. When you do,
you'll truly be standing up for wildlife that can't
stand up for themselves.

Thanks for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Larry Schweiger
