Baby Einstein Videos - Do They Live Up to the Genius?

Annie Camden
As a mother of an infant, I am often in need of a small break so I can go to the bathroom, take a shower, or even just chill out for a few minutes. While I agree with the American Pediatric Association's recommendation in not allowing a child under the age of two to watch television - unfortunately, sometimes it's a necessity. So out of the countless available children's video's available I have found that my child and I are very fond of the Baby Einstein collection.

The Baby Einstein collection offers a wide range of choices for your young child or infant. Including musical selections such as Baby Mozart, Baby Bach, Baby Beethoven; art selections such as Baby Van Gogh; scientific selections such as Baby Galileo, Baby Neptune; and others like Baby's First Moves, Baby Noah, and Baby Wordsworth - just to name a few. This wide range in topics offers you and your child a variety of choices that best suits you and your child's needs.

While my child does not like all of the videos that he has seen, the creators of the Baby Einstein really know how to capture my child's attention while offering an educational experience. As a fair amount of research shows, children benefit from listening to music in general and certainly classical music. Baby Einstein videos are filled with classical music set in time to small snip it's of video of corresponding objects. They do a great job of looking at objects at a close range, much like that of a child's view.

Their quick scene changes are great at keeping attention while offering a wide variety of images for a child to watch. One of the best features of the Baby Einstein videos is their simplicity in showing images. Objects are most often shown on a white or black background so your child can clearly see the object intended rather than being overwhelmed with additional background objects. Most of the Baby Einstein video's also use a mix of toys, children, and words to provide educational information to the child.

After viewing several of the different videos I have found that my child definitely prefers some over the others but overall is quite pleased with the Baby Einstein collection. While I don't think that Baby Einstein's are going to make a genius out of a child, the information is done very well and provides great stimulation for little minds.

Finally, I recommend that if you do allow your child to watch television to limit it to less than 30 minutes a day or less and try to limit my own child's television viewing I have found that the Baby Einstein video's are a great way for me to catch that small break that I need while giving my child a fairly educational but definitely entertaining break as well.
