Baby Gear Review: Stokke Tripp Trapp

Nicole Feliciano
Highchairs are key pieces of baby gear to research. Finding a high chair that blends function and form is a tall order. Stokke's classic Tripp Trapp meets the needs of the modern, eco-minded family.

For the busy modern family, meals are a chance to connect, talk about the day, teach about manners, and instill good eating habits. Thanks to the Tripp Trapp's design, it is easy to bring your child right up to the table.

Invented in Norway in 1972, this chair is a staple in the many contemporary homes. These height-adjustable dining chairs are made to last. In fact, many chairs become hand-me-downs passed from friend to friend. And as far as looks go, even after a decade, the Tripp Trapp is appealing.

Stokke uses durable materials to construct their chairs. Instead of plastic, they opt for painted beechwood. This renewable wood source is extremely sturdy (a Tripp Trapp can hold an adult up to 300 pounds) and wipes clean with a damp sponge.

The seat and footrest can be customized to your child's height. Simply loosen the screws with an Allen wrench and move the seat to a comfortable setting then tighten again. The brand backs up their product with a seven-year warranty.

In addition to favoring wood over plastic, Stokke also flat packs the chairs to cut down on packaging waste. The novice parent may be freaked out at the idea of assembling the chair, but it's doable. You'll need an Allen wrench and a helper. From start to finish it will take you about 20 minutes to assemble. (Note: Before you tighten everything, be sure to check the height--the child should be able to sit with flat feet.)

Once assembled, the chair is quickly accessible to toddlers: Testers as young as 18 months can climb up and into the seat with parental supervision. Once the child is older, the safety straps can be removed for increased independence.

Unlike traditional high chairs that have trays, the Tripp Trapp is best used with a placemat. Even though there is no tray to pop off, the post-meal mess is easy to wipe down. Plus, you'll love that there are no crevices for crumbs and grime to hide.

Stokke sells a full line of accessories to complement the Tripp Trapp. Pick from Baby Sets, High Chair Cushions, and more. Currently there are about ten colors offered in the Tripp Trapp. Expect to pay about $250 for a standard model and $300 for the more contemporary colors (green, pink and yellow) in the "Trend" line.
