Baby and Grandma Ghosts: First-Person Ghost Story

Pam Gaulin
I've never seen a ghost, but my son has. Not long after he had to undergo minor surgery, for which he received anesthesia, my son starting talking about a baby ghost in our new house. We had been living in our "new" house for a couple of months, and the house was in reality far from being new. It was built back in the 1930s.

The Baby Ghost Story
Out of the blue my son said, "The baby ghost is crying. I asked him the baby's name but he did not know, although he said the baby was a girl. I told him that maybe the baby ghost was hungry or needed her diaper changed, which he pretended to do. He said the baby ghost was still crying. He said she spilled something on her dress and that's why she was crying. I helped him pretend to clean up the baby ghost, as my son seemed sincere and serious.

Who is Grandma Hull?
Every once in a while, the topic of the baby ghost comes up and then he forgets about it. One day he started talking about "Grandma Hull," and I scratched my head, wondering who he meant. I was on the phone with my sister when I realized that Hull was the last name of the woman who lived in our house before we bought it.

She was an elderly woman who had outlived not only her husband but also her children. She lived well into her 90s and is a near legend in the area for being a strong, old woman who lived alone until her death. I was thoroughly spooked because while my son may have heard us mention the name of the former owner of the house, we certainly never called anyone "Grandma Hull."

I've been hesitant to conduct research on any previous deaths related to the history of our home, including that of a girl who could be the baby ghost. The baby ghost could very well have been an imaginary friend he made up, and he rarely mentions her anymore. There are not inexplicable phenomenon in our house beyond the normal creaking of an older home. There are no cold spots that cannot be explained away by drafty windows or floor boards.

Ghosts or Not?
In the world of ghost stories, ours is pretty tame, and not too scary or disturbing. If there had been or is a baby ghost in our home, she may be resting peacefully knowing that we will take care of her if she cries out.

As for "Grandma Hull," who may have died here in the house, the mystery remains.

Wonderful article. My house was haunted, both by a pleasant and not so pleasant spirit. The pleasant one wasn't a concern. I was lying in bed wide awake one night thinking about homework for college when all the dresser pulls in the room started banging at once and it went on and on and on. I have also felt the urge to flat out run in my own home before. Thankfully, both spirits have moved on. I do wonder about your stove problem even more now.

Very cool story. Too bad as adults we seem not to be as open to these kinds of things as your son is.

    Very interesting story, thanks Pam.

This is more chilling than the blood, guts and gore ghost stories. I don't think I would want to research my home to find out about deaths, etc.

I'm with Jan on this. This story kinda gives me the shivers.

Some of the books about 9//11 (such as Kristen Breitweiser's) talk about the children acting like the deceased parent was in the room...maybe kids are more atune to the afterlife. Interexting article....love old houses.
