The name Ravi comes from Hinduism, and literally means "fire bird." It's another name for the Hindu sun god Surya ("the supreme light").
POPULARITY:
Ravi is one of the most common names in the south of India. It remains very uncommon in the U.S., not breaking the top 1000 for boys' names.

A character in the game Magic: The Gathering is named Ravi. Breaking from tradition that it is a boy's name, Ravi, a planeswalker (a person who is able to travel across planes of existence), is a woman.
NAMESAKES:
The Ravi River flows from the Himalayas in India's Punjab province west to Pakistan. It is one of the five rivers that join to form the formidable Punjab river, and is 475 miles long. India and Pakistan disagreed over ownership of the waters, which were used for irrigation by both countries, until 1960, when a treaty was signed.
Sunday is known as Ravivar in India.

Ravi Shankar (born Apr. 7, 1920) is a renowned sitar player and composer. He is credited with popularizing Indian music worldwide, and his performances in the 60s at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock endeared him to the younger generation. Musician George Harrison has called Ravi Shakar "the godfather of world music."
Actor Ravi Patel (born Dec. 18, 1978) has had guest roles in TV series such as "Scrubs" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." He appeared in 2007's Transformers movie.
Ravi Vakil (born Feb. 22, 1970) is a mathematician specializing in algebraic geometry. He's received several awards from the National Science Foundation and American Mathematical Society and is currently a professor at Stanford.

Post a CommentI did not know this. It is beautiful to call a child: Sun. Interesting that in the English speaking nations, and in Israel (where they speak Hebrew), Sun or Shemesh is not a common name. Names say a lot about our culture.
