Baby Puts Everything in His Mouth

Your baby is on the way!
You are filled with anticipation and joy.
You are planning and preparing your baby's room and baby's layette.
Your friends are planning a "Baby Shower". There is excitement in the air.
You know that baby will put everything in his mouth. So one of your most important plan is for your baby's safety.

According to Flaura Koplin Winston, MD, PhD, Director of Trauma link at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "Before you baby-proof your home, try crawling around on all fours and "think" like your baby." Baby will go after anything in sight that he can reach coins, food crumbs, toys, cords, scraps of paper, garbage and medications and he will investigate and research everything by putting them in his mouth.

Here are some tips to help you as you plan for your baby's safety.

Baby's Room
Start by child proofing baby's room.

Keep all small objects out of reach and off the floor.

Keep baby's items such as bath oils and lotions on a shelf out of reach.

As baby starts crawling and roaming about, you will have to become more vigilant.

Mobiles are beautiful and fascinating in baby's room at first, but later they should be removed when baby is able to tug and pull at them and get them in his mouth.

Your baby's safety is an on going responsibility.

Child Safety Locks
Use these locks for cupboards and drawers in your baby's room, the bathrooms, kitchen, living room, medicine cabinets and in any other rooms with cabinets or drawers that your baby can get to.

Baby Gates
Use baby gates to keep your baby from roaming into areas that may have dangerous items that he will put into his mouth.
Remove all refrigerator magnets to prevent them from falling off and ending up in baby's mouth.

Hazardous Products
Remove all hazardous products such as, chemicals, cleaning products, laundry supplies, paints and keep them locked up securely out of your baby's reach.
Some plants may be harmful so keep all plants out of your baby's reach.
