Baby Shower Barbecues

A new baby shower theme is sweeping moms and dads to be-the coed baby shower. Although most men would scoff at the idea of attending a baby shower, by making the shower "guy friendly," you're likely to get a positive response from the male species.

One inventive idea for a baby shower is a barbecue. Of course, this type of gathering will only work if you reside in a state that is warm year round or if you're throwing your baby shower during the summer months, but if the time frame and weather permits, a baby shower barbecue is a great way to celebrate the impending birth of your little one.

Invitations:

Keep invitations as plain as possible. Avoid cards depicting rattles and bottles or invitations covered with bows and other frills. These types of decoration will automatically send the potential male guests scrambling for an excuse not to attend. In addition, instead of writing the words "baby shower," anywhere on the card, simply write something like, "John and Jane invite you to celebrate the birth of their baby at poolside barbecue." Also indicate whether or not children are invited.

Venue:

There are several options when choosing a location for a baby shower barbecue. Public parks are a great place because they usually have grills, tables, restrooms, a playground for the kids, and covered pavilions in case of rain. If you or a friend who is willing to host has a nice sized yard, this would also be an option. House parties can be preferable when it comes to the weather. All of the guests can simply venture inside if it's too hot or rains. If you live in an apartment complex, have the barbecue out at the community pool. Most complexes have grills and areas near the pool where residents can host parties. The benefit of this scenario is that your guests can use the pool, so your barbecue becomes a pool party as well!

Food/Drinks

Depending on your preference, you can serve an assortment of food at a baby shower barbecue. Since men will be in attendance, it is advisable to stock up hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as potato salad, cole slaw, and chips. You can still serve the traditional cake, because after the regular food has been eaten, even the male guests will welcome a sweet treat. Beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages can also add to the "party" atmosphere of the baby shower.

Choosing to have a coed baby shower is not as difficult as it might seem. Although not as traditional as the all female party, the baby shower barbecue offers couples a non traditional--and fun--way to celebrate the birth of their child.
