This is and whimsical and funny twist on the traditional baby shower cake ideas.
I am always looking for funny and new baby shower dessert and cake ideas. There are so many possibilities.
You can use this edible Mini Diaper Pin Shaped Wedding Cakes for a great gift for someone special as well who is expecting.
To Make Mini Diaper Pin Shaped Baby Shower Cakes You will need:
1 of your favorite boxed white cake mixes
1 - 2 Tub of Vanilla icing
White Tube Writing Icing (2 to 3 tubes)
1 Diaper Pin cookie cutter (about 4 inches wide)
Writing icing (white) or pastry bag and a #4 tip
Bake your favorite cake mix as usual. You need to bake it in a 13" X 9" baking pan. You can bake two cakes (or more for a large baby shower) and cut them out exactly the same to make a large number of Mini Diaper Pin Shaped Baby shower Cakes.
Once the cake has cooled flip it out of the baking pans onto a large platter, carving board, or whatever you have.
Now, stick the cake in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes. You want to slightly freeze is, but not freeze it completely. This will help you cut it into the shape of the Mini Diaper Pin Shaped Cakes.
Now, use a Diaper Pin cookie cutter to cut out the Mini Diaper Pin Cakes on the sheet cake. Simply press the cookie cutter in like you would cookie dough. Pop the Diaper Pin out and lay it on a flat surface.
You should find this sheet cake cuts easily into the shape of these Mini Diaper Pin Cakes since it is chilled and slightly frozen. This will make the cake much more easy to cut and get crisp clean edges of the small Diaper Pin.
Now, you really should go ahead and place these simple Mini Baby Buggy Cakes on a board or serving platter before you decorate it. You will not be able to move it once you decorate it or you will ruin it.
Now, take your 1 tub of the icing. You can use any colors like pink to decorate the ribbon. To make Diaper Pin baby shower cake idea elegant I recommend leaving them in pink or pastel blue and outline in white piping icing.
You may need both tubs (or more) to adequacy cover a large number Mini Diaper Pin Cakes.
Coat the entire Mini Diaper Pin Cakes with a thick coat of icing. Use your spatula or butter knife to make the icing really smooth and flat. The more smooth the better. In fact if you like working with fondant icing, that would be the best, but you can use regular canned icing for this. Reserve some icing aside for touch ups later.
Tip: You may find it easier to apply a thin coat of icing to the entire Mini Diaper Pin Cakes. Then place the cakes in the refrigerator for about an hour.
Once this thin layer has chilled apply another thicker coat of pink vanilla icing. This first coat is called the crumb coat for obvious reasons. This is a great way that the cake professionals use to get a clean smooth surface of icing on their cakes.
Now for the real fun. You get to decorate your Mini Diaper Pin Cakes. Apply a second smooth coat of your butter cream or vanilla icing.
To garnish take your tube of matching white icing and outline your Diaper Pin. This will be important because a lot of the detail will be needed to help this cake. Use a picture of a diaper pin to help you outline. You can always trace the lines on the cake with a toothpick, then outline with the piping icing.
So, if you want you can make this Diaper Pin cake in any color, to make it look elegant be sure to pipe on the outlines in the same color though.
The look is timeless and perfect for any baby shower cake!
