Baby Shower Idea: Donation of Diapers

Jennifer Hewes
Having a baby shower is very exciting. The anticipation to see the new items that you can display in your baby's room, the clothing that you can dress the baby up in, and the blankets that you will soon swaddle your bundle of joy in, never comes quick enough. The baby shower is a time that creates a reality of the new person that will be entering your world. When I was planning my baby shower for the birth of my twin daughters, I researched many avenues to make the party even more creative and worthwhile. When I discovered the 'Donation of Diapers' idea, I became even more thrilled.

I was reading an article online about an idea that would be entertaining for the guests at the baby shower and that would benefit the parents. The idea was to have each guest bring a box of diapers along with the gift. I thought that this idea sounded a bit too greedy. Of course many of the guests want to help the new parents-to-be out, but with diapers being so expensive, this seemed like a lot to ask of people. Instead of using this exact idea, I tweaked it a bit. Inside of my baby shower invitation I typed out little cards that said, 'For each box of diapers that you bring to the baby shower, your name will be entered into a drawing for a massage and wine gift basket. This is optional.' I wanted to use the 'Donation of Diapers', but then again I wanted to make it appealing to the guests as well. I figured that this idea would generate some interest and that I would receive a few boxes. If only two boxes were brought to the shower, it would be helpful!

The day of my shower I could not even believe the abundance of diapers that were spilling off the tables. Almost each of my fifty guests brought along one box of diapers ranging in sizes from zero to five. Some of my close relatives went to our local BJ's and brought two bulk boxes for the babies. To my amazement, I compiled so many boxes of diapers, we had to make additional trips back and forth to transport them home. To this day, I am so grateful for my cousin who donated the massage gift certificate from her own business and my other family members who added items such as wine and chocolate to the gift basket. I am even more grateful to the generous guests who donated the diapers and brought gorgeous gifts for my beautiful daughters. The 'Donation of Diapers' idea saved us hundreds and hundreds of dollars. The first time that we had to buy a package of diapers was when my daughters were eight months old. That just goes to show how amazing a simple idea can be.
