Some infants will drop off to sleep by listening to music. You can try playing peaceful music softly in the nursery. Also, most babies enjoy being sung to, and a lullaby frequently works. You could as well attempt reading repetitive stories or poems to the baby in a quiet voice, this may work even if the infant can't understand them.
Many parents have reported that their babies feel safe and secure when they are being rocked, which can have a very calming effect on them. Almost all babies will drop off to sleep when they are walked in their stroller or driven in the car. However, it may also be extremely discouraging to get your baby sleeping at these times while you have no opportunity of sleeping yourself! It could be helpful though if you just put your baby in the stroller or the car and go for a really quick trip out and back.
It is important ro remeber to be careful to not carry-over your anxiousness about sleep (or lack of sleep) to your child. This may seem impossible to do since you are so desperate for your baby to drift off, but it is crucial. Your baby is very in tuned to your moods and will definetly feel your anxiety and connect it with sleep or nighttime, they may even become scared to doze off or frightened of the dark. This may eventually cause sleep problems that continue long into childhood and possibly adulthood too.
Attempt to produce the experience that sleep is a enjoyable and pleasurable state to be in and remain in, by being as quiet and content as possible when you are attempting to get your child to sleep. Calm soothing music might assist you with your own emotional state, play it for you as well as your baby.
If you are finding that the present sleeping routine that you are practicing is just not working, you might want to think about changing your regular routine. You could try different times through out the day, you could also try having both mom and dad put baby to bed, or try switching the baby's feeding routine, walks, daytime naps or even the time that you wake up in the morning. It is important that you try not to force your baby into a routine that is just suitable for you, it is quite possible that you will have a baby with a very different disposition to your own.
Finally, if these ideas don't help you and your baby, then you may want to make an appointment with your pediatrician. It may help you to recognise what is typical and what is not, and to get some help for any severe baby sleep problems that may affect your ability to care for your baby.
