Looking for swimming lessons for your little one this summer? Bloomington, Indiana offers great resources for parents when it comes for teaching your baby to swim. Not only do these programs help orient your baby to the water, they also offer an activity that you can do with your baby, promoting parent-child bonding.

The Monroe County YMCA, located at 2125 S. Highland Avenue in Bloomington, offers a Parent/Child Aquatics Program sponsored by the Red Cross. The class, held inside, helps babies become comfortable in and around water and, since parents participate, it's a great activity for you to do together. There are two age groups in this program, 6-18 months and 18-36 months. Classes are available in two, four, or six-week sessions beginning in May and extending throughout the summer. With the two and four-week sessions taking place on weekdays and the six-week session being offered on Saturdays, there is sure to be a class to fit your schedule. Registration begins at $35 for members of the YMCA and $55 for non-members. For more information, you may call (812)332-5555 or register online at http://monroecountyymca.org/youthswimlessons.aspx.

The Bryan Park Pool is another great place for baby swim lessons in Bloomington. Sponsored by the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, it offers an Infant/Tot program for babies ages 6 months to 2 years. The class is meant only to orient young children to water, not to teach swimming techniques. It also offers safety information to parents, with an emphasis on how to supervise a child in the water. Parent participate in this class as well and, since it is held in the outdoor pool located at 1100 S. Woodlawn Avenue, sunscreen is a must for your baby. Sessions begin in early June and both morning and evening classes are offered. Prices are $40 for in-city residents and $50 for out of city residents. However, there are scholarships and a fee waiver application available. For more information or to register, call (812) 349-3700. You may also register online at http://bloomington.in.gov/documents/viewDocument.php?document_id=523#parentchild.

Keep in mind that these classes do not teach your baby to survive in the water, so never leave your baby or any small child unattended near the water. They are, however, a great step in teaching your child to swim. Both locations discussed above offer more advanced classes for toddlers and older children, so your baby will be well on the way to being a competent swimmer!
