"Baby Taylor" - the Traveler's Guitar of Choice

Alex Werner
Taylor guitars have been around since 1974 and since that time have produced some quality sounding instruments, one of which is the Baby Taylor. This is a ¾ size 6- string guitar that is made as a travel guitar, but is also great for people with small hands. Don't be fooled though into thinking that just because it's a small guitar that there must not be any good quality sound from it. On the contrary, the sound quality is better than most large and more expensive guitars.

The Baby is made from either Sitka spruce or Mahogany, with the back and sides being made from Sapele, a tree native to Africa, laminate. It has an ebony bridge, with ebony fretboard, inlaid with pearl dots. With 19 frets and at 33 ¾" in total length, it is sure to be a standard carry-on for airline travel with guitar players everywhere-especially now that luggage fees are a norm. Also, it comes with a well-padded gig bag that has pockets inside and out along with a shoulder strap and carrying handles.

Standard strings are the "Elixir Light Gauge," which make the playing sound great as there is little to no buzz. The sound is naturally large and bright for the small size of guitar that it is and unless wanted, needs no electric pickup; this is due to the exceptional manufacturing process of all Taylor's, especially the Baby. As stated earlier, compared to some other full sized guitars this one really has a much warmer and fuller sound.

Care and cleaning are the same for any acoustic, but in my experience through traveling with this guitar it tends to go out of tune easily if not kept at a constant moisture content. In the instructions that come with the Baby, it states that a sound-hole "Dampit" humidifier be purchased and used to control the level of humidity the guitar receives. These can be purchased at most music stores. Each guitar has some curvature to it and must remain so as to not only continue sounding great, but also to avoid buckling and cracking as well.

For children and beginners alike the Baby is a great learning tool; for the seasoned musician it's a great sounding instrument that can be added to any band or played on its own. The price is also great at around $400 with the gig bag; it's a steal. I love playing my Baby Taylor especially when I travel, because it has that big guitar sound without being big!
