In this article let's look at a few tips to help make baby teething better for both of you.
Teething is the beginning of your babies teeth starting to grow in. Teething can start anywhere between three months and twelve months old. It can be painful for your baby because the teeth come in through the gums. This is where the phrase cutting teeth came from.
Signs of teething may include fussiness, chewing and gnawing on objects, loss of appetite, swollen gums, drooling, a fever, diarrhea earaches and diaper rash.
During teething, your baby will loves to chew on just about everything they can get their hands on! Babies may also nibble on your fingers, knuckles, arms, and sometimes the breast that feeds them.
In cases where the infant is in obvious pain, some doctors recommend the use of anti-inflammatory or child-safe pain-relief treatments containing benzocaine, such as Baby Orajel. Some infants show relief from chewing on cold objects such as a cool washcloth or a specially-designed teething ring that can be frozen.
You might also want to massage baby's gums with a clean finger. Your baby might find it uncomfortable initially, but will probably find it comforting after a few gentle rubs.
A common question is how do you tell if you baby is sick or just teething. A good rule of thumb is et your doctor decide. Here are some general ways to tell the difference between teething and an illness such as an ear infection.
1. Teething hardly ever causes a fever higher than 101° F .
2. Teething mucus is clear saliva and doesn't run out the nose. Cold mucus is thick and yellow. A nasal discharge usually means an infection or allergy. It may be accompanied by eye drainage.
3. Babies do not act sicker when they teeth. If you are not sure contact your doctor.
3. Teething may be confused with an earache. Babies pull at their ears during teething, probably because of pain radiating from the teeth to the ears. With an ear infection babies usually hurt more lying down and have accompanying signs of a cold.
These are just a few suggestions. Remember it will get better. We all started out with no teeth and look at us now. Your baby will get through this and so will you.
