5 Ideas for Baby's First Birthday Cake

Milestones are a big part of any person's life. One of the first big milestones in a life is that of a first birthday. More than likely it's not one that your baby will remember, but as a parent, you will. Many parents find it difficult to decide upon the centerpiece of their baby's first birthday cake.

Before you start to pick a theme there are a few things to remember. This is a party for a one-year old, so remember that your baby is still a baby. Go easy on sugar in the cake, so as not to give your toddler a tummy ache as a birthday present. It's better to go with whipped cream icing as opposed to rich buttercream icing. You should also be aware that if the cake goes over well with your baby, that he or she is going to grab and more than likely "wear" the cake. Thus, there should always be a small cake or cupcake for the baby, as well as a separate cake for the other guests. This way you get the opportunity to get the best photos of baby and his or her first birthday cake and your guests get to enjoy cake, too.

Here are a few ideas that will go over great with baby, mommy, and daddy, too.

The #"1" Cake

How about a cake in the shape of a one, for the first year? Makes sense, huh? Simply have a cake in the shape of a one, with some bright colored icing. It's simple and to the point. This goes well for a girl or boy. You can also go with decorations that reflect your baby's first year. Throw "1s" all around until you heart's content.

Building Blocks Are Not Just For Building Any More

Why not use "A, B, C's" or "1, 2, 3's" for baby's first cake? This is a simple yet clever idea. As you baby is about to embark on learning things such as the alphabets and numbers, it would make sense to give him or her a head start. This is a simple idea that could use a cake cut into squares as the cake or place the "blocks" upon the cake for a more 3-D effect.

Playtime for Baby

As you're well aware by now, if it's big and it moves your baby has got to put his or her hands on it. So that you get those great shots, go for things similar to your baby's toys. Why not go for a train, car, or teddy bear. They think it's a toy and dig in. These are objects that will surely get your baby grabbing for more.

Colorful Baby

Ever thought about your little one being an artist? Why not start them out this year with a cake using the primary colors. The primary colors (red, blue, yellow, and green) are bright colors that will catch your tot's eye and there's no way that they can pass up this opportunity. Just keep in mind that the food coloring in these colors can stain. So remember to dress them in something that you don't mind getting permanently messy.

Animals Galore

If you've ever taken your little one to a petting zoo just so he or she could look at the animals, you probably found them reaching for them, as well. Animals are another theme that goes over well with 1-year-olds. Cows to pigs, dogs to chickens, any of these should jump start baby's first birthday party.

Whatever theme you chose, just make sure that the day is enjoyable and fun. Remember, your little boy or girl will only turn one in their lifetime.
