Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula (Dairy Based) by Nature's One: Review

Indictment on Life'sDHA, Life'sARA, Corn Syrup Solids in Infant Formulas and Unscrupulous Infant Formula Companies

T. H. Pankey
If for some reason you must use infant formula instead of the infinitely-better-for-baby mother's milk..., seriously, there's only one formula you should consider: Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula by Nature's One. There's Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula, and then there's the rest of the infant formula afield. Yes, afield; the other formula manufacturers aren't even on the same playing field as Baby's Only Organic. I'm not just speaking solely about the non-organic infant formula market either-organic infant and toddler formulas, too. Take it from me when I say I've done enough research and winnowing to know for myself, again, there's Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula, and then there's all of the others. Sure, sure, most baby formula manufacturers are going to tell you how its formula is the best for your baby, especially since it's supplemented with DHA and ARA. Even more so now is it the best with the advent of life'sDHA and life's ARA. That's just a marketing gimmick promulgated by publicly held Martek Biosciences Corp., and plain ole' in-it-for-a-buck, made-to-be-profiteering salesman talk. Without further ado, here's the skinny on why Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula is head and shoulders above the fray.

Reasons Why Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula is Superior to All Other Infant Formulas Sold in the U.S.

The main reasons why Baby's Only is superior: nutrition; source of nutrition; price.

Nutrition

I say main reasons why, because the brevity and scope of this article simply isn't going to get into all of the intricate reasons why, nor fully explain those that are listed. Let's look at the first one: nutrition. When a company is willing to compare its product's ingredients and nutrition content side-by-side with other leading products, such as infant formula manufacturer Nature's One does with all of its products, including Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula, it's usually for one or two reasons: it strongly views its product better than the other products and it wants to show such; the company is honest enough with itself and thus shows itself honest with everyone else in that, while it recognizes its product is superior in some ways, it may not be superior in all comparable categories for what a particular infant may need in special dietary situations-yet it doesn't concern itself with where it may prove to be equal, or even inferior, to the other products its comparing.

If you follow this link here, you can see where Nature's One has taken the time to compare its Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula (Dairy Based) next to several top selling infant formula products, such as Earth's Best®, Wal-Mart® brand Parents Choice® (yes, go figure), and Vermont Organics™.

Moreover, the nutritional comparison chart stacks them all against good ole', infinitely-better-for-baby, live mother's milk. Now, that's honesty on the part of Nature's One. What other infant formula manufacturer does such? Nada. Not a one did I find. In fact, as I was examining different formulas through its maker's websites, one formula manufacturer, Mead Johnson for Enfamil, wouldn't list ingredients for its formula. Why not? Could it be...

Corn Syrup, Its Derivatives, and Corn Syrup Solids

All things corn syrup, including corn syrup solids, are almost without fail the cheapest form of carbohydrate available on the market, even for infant formula manufacturers. Go over the ingredients listed on the can or bottle of infant formula you use, or may be contemplating for use, and look at the first, most prominent, and often the main ingredient in it. For a great majority of infant formulas, the first ingredient, or within the first few ingredients, is corn syrup solids.

What's more, eating foodstuff with corn syrup solids can make you, or in this case your little one, want to eat more: adults and infants alike don't stay full longer. And that's a good thing for infant formula manufacturers, but not so good for your little one. Think about it: over and over we hear how infants strictly fed on formula gain noticeably more weight than babies strictly breastfed. So, too, it's no surprise childhood obesity, and its attendant health complications, is directly linked to children who were formula fed rather than breastfed.²

Corn syrup solids is a highly concentrated simple sugar, in turn a simple carbohydrate the body burns nearly as quick as it is consumed. In everday terms it's what is known as fast energy, a sugar rush or sugar high. Again, infant formula manufacturers aplenty use corn syrup solids as the primary source of carbohydrates for your baby.

On the other hand, organic brown rice syrup is the good source of complex carbohydrate used by Nature's One in its Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula. Further, brown rice syrup is a complex carbohydrate that takes longer to digest. This slower digestion taking place within your baby means your baby is steadily absorbing carbohydrate into its bloodstream, and so produces insulin at a steadier rate.

In other words, all things equal, there's no insulin spike. That also means the body is much more likely to properly regulate blood glucose levels; unlike corn syrup solids, which make it much more likely the body will malfunction due to its inability to properly regulate blood glucose levels-otherwise known as type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Corn syrup solids is mainly glucose. Too much glucose, too fast into the blood streams, equals a wonky insulin-producing pancreas.

One more matter of many yet unstated about corn syrup solids, corn syrup solids more often than not are from genetically modified corn, and contain sulfur dioxide from how it is processed.

"I've heard about them changing corn, though I didn't know it's the corn used in a lot of formula, but what's so bad about sulfur dioxide," you ask.

When ingested, sulfur dioxide makes its way to the lungs where it is oxidized to a significant extent before entering systemic circulation. Sulfur dioxide is directly connected to lung ailments, including asthma and bronchitis.³ Again, Baby's Only Organic doesn't use harmful corn syrup solids; the majority of other infant formula manufacturers do use some form of corn syrup, which, for the most part, is processed with sulfur dioxide.

The organic brown rice syrup in Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula isn't derived from genetically modified rice, and requires minimal processing.

Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formulas Do Not Contain life'sDHA Fatty Acids

The aforementioned Martek Biosciences Corp. boasts how successful its been at selling its life'sDHA™ and life'sARA™ to infant formula manufacturers. These same infant formula manufacturers to which it has succeeded in selling its experiment ( the FDA hasn't approved nor disapproved life'sDHA and life'sARA ) account for about 90% of the infant formula sold in the U.S. Baby's Only Organic manufacturer, Nature's One, is not in that number-and for good reason.

DHASCO™ and ARASCO™, or what is eventually commonly called by infatuated and uninformed parents who simply read the slick copy writing on the front of the cans and websites, "Supports Healthy Eye and Brain Development," or "critical to the development of baby's mental and visual development," DHA and ARA, are oil extractions from fermented algae and fungus. Come again?

Yes, if it weren't off-kilter enough to think dead formula, and how it's being advertised by one particular infant formula manufacturer, Similac®, "closer than ever to breast milk," is any comparison to live mother's milk, now the herd mentality kicks in, and what you get is an adulating public-at-large, and particularly parents with sucklings, or those with sucklings on the mind, believing when they feed they're innocent little ones life'sDHA and life'sARA supplemented formula, they're feeding them something that's going to possibly make 'em Mensa-like, with an eagle's vision.

Because let's face it, when it comes to infant formula, it's a seller's market: not only are most parent looking to confer every advantage they can on their children, but when it comes to feeding infants, there's only two choices: breast milk or infant formula.

You've heard the conversations between parents: "I use such-and-such formula," Suzie says. "Does it have DHA and ARA in it? Because it ain't no good unless it has DHA and ARA in it," Joan replies.

Suzie: It's that good?
Joan: That new DHA and ARA they're putting in it makes it really, really ,close to our breastmilk. I've even heard the DHA and ARA they're putting in it is from such a special source it's clinically proven to improve brain and eye development.

Suzie: Wow! I can get a few nights off, now.
Joan: Yep. I use it all the time, ever since Timmy was about two weeks old. He gets a little diarrhea every now and then, although I'm not sure it's from the formula; but, the doctor told me to just keep an eye on it, and if he diarrheas his Pampers® for an extended period of time bring him in so he can get to the bottom of it.

However, what Joan, and now more than likely Suzie, don't realize is humans produce DHA and ARA on their own, and serious doubt exists in the scientific community whether DHA and ARA extracted from algae and fungus even conveys any long-term benefits to an infant's brain and eye development. And what Joan nor her pediatrician realize is the inordinate number of cases of diarrhea parents of newborn babies and older babies alike are experiencing and reporting, as a direct result of life'sDHA and life'sARA supplemented infant formulas.¹

If that weren't enough, the life'sDHA and life'sARA infant formula manufacturers purchased from publicly held Martek Biosciences Corp., and for which they now use to sell parents a bill of goods about their products, whether organic or not, are treated with hexane solvent ( neurotoxin ), acid, bleach, and deodorizer.

Take a look at how Dr. Sam Zeller of Martek Biosciences Corp., itself, describes the manufacturing process of its patented DHA and ARA in a response letter to the FDA:

"The oil is then separated from the dried biomass by hexane extraction and centrifugation and/or filtration, followed by winterization. The hexane phase undergoes additional centrifugation/filtration to remove solids then the winterized oil is heated and treated with acid. Subsequently, the oil is treated with caustic, centrifuged, bleached and deodorized."

I don't know about you, but most persons don't eat things that stink, in other words, that need to be deodorized. How much less does it make sense to eat food you first treat with a caustic material.

Question: Does the neurotoxin, hexane, used for processing the algae and fungi make its way into the infant formula right along with the algae and fungi oils?

Source of Nutrition for Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula

Again, Nature's One Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula hasn't gone down the slippery slope of this new and improved source of DHA and ARA. In other words, DHA and ARA supplement isn't added to its formulas, which are all organic formulas. And again, humans produce their own DHA and ARA.

Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula (Dairy Based) contains Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic Fatty Acids that the human body, itself, converts into longer chain fatty acids, such as DHA and ARA. Now, these two fatty acids, Alpha-Linolenic and Linolenic, the human body does not make, and yet are essential to the human body. Even further, the number of fatty acids in mother's breast milk is literally a hundred times the couple, or few, fatty acids in infant formulas.

Neither does Baby's Only Organic formulas contain milk protein or dairy derivatives purchased from China; some of the other infant formula manufacturers do. The world-at-large has been on red alert, so to speak, on the need for serious reform in China, regarding its agriculture. That's not to say serious reform isn't necessary in the U.S.

However, which would you prefer: buying a bunch of bananas from your neighbor down the street, and for which you've seen the banana tree grow, and how he took care of it; or buying a bunch of bananas from a place far away, and for which you have no idea who the seller is beyond an acquaintance you just met, and for which you didn't watch the banana tree grow, nor had seen how the seller took care of it? For all you know, he could have urinated on it everyday, as a means to water it.

Baby's Only Organic uses organic soy lecithin and organic soybean oil. Why is the use of organic soy important? The majority of infant formula manufacturers, inclusive of both organic and non-organic infant formula manufacturers, use soy lecithin and/or soy and soy derivitaves, which is processed using...yep, that ubiquitous hexane solvent, again a neurotoxin.

"Residue tests reveal that small amounts of hexane can and do appear in ingredients processed with the toxic chemical. The government does not require that companies test for hexane residues before selling foods to consumers, including soy-based infant formula." ²

You can add to that quote infant formula manufacturers, again both organic and non-organic, that use soy lecithin in its ingredients. There's a big difference between organic and non-organic products, including soy lecithin.

Price: Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula (Dairy Based) from Nature's One

Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula (Dairy Based) from Nature's One is priced significantly below other infant formulas, both organic and even inorganic. Even when Enfamil, Similac ,and some of the others that do send out gimmicky coupons made to look like checks ( not all infant formula manufacturers offer coupons, e.g. Earth's Best ) in their marketing ploys, you're still coming out ahead with Nature's One Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula-$9.92 a can (online).

Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula ( Dairy Based ) from Nature's One is sold in 12.7 OZ cans, which don't have plastic scoops in them. The company says they don't send plastic scoops in them so as to avoid any possibility of BPA contamination. A 12.7 ounce can is on average half the weight of what the other infant formula manufacturers sell its formulas-25.7 ounces. Of course, some formula manufacturers have an array of sizes and choices between powder and liquid.

After all mathematical comparison calculations, Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula ( Dairy Based ) costs on average 30 to 40 cents less per ounce than all of the other infant formula manufacturers. That's against the most basic formulas the other infant formula manufacturers offer, too. The more bells and whistles the other infant formula manufacturers advertise is in its formulas is the greater the price difference, when compared to Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula.

Conclusion

To recap, if you must use infant formula, and there are a few extreme instances beyond just a mother's inability to produce milk when it is necessary, keep in mind the near night-and-day difference between the two, and choose the best, Baby's only Organic Toddler Formula by Nature's One. Similac may be named so because it likes to see itself similar-to-lactation, and very much wants parents to see it that way, too; and Vermont Organic formula may sound nice, along with the cute cow smiling at you on the can; but, in reality, they're nothing compared to real live breast milk. Of course, feeding your little one only infant formula doesn't mean you're writing him or her a death certificate.

In fact, if it weren't for the nutritional performance of infant formulas, some infants could die when women can't lactate whatsoever, and after all other provisional means for the infant have been exhausted: such as, the assistance given for increasing breast milk production, and for which has a very high success rate; such as, the assistance given to re-lactate, and for which also has a high success rate; such as, women standing in as wet nursing, and so forth.

But let's be clear: after decades of having infant formula on the market, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, in the late 90s, was still trying to determine the optimum amount of iron in infant formulas. That's just the iron in formula for which the scientists are still tinkering with after all of these years. If that's the case with something as basic as iron, what's to say of infant formula on the market on the whole?

Not to minimize how infant formula does benefit infants, yet live breast milk can't be replicated. No matter how a company trademarks the algae and fungi oil it extracts and sells to infant formula manufacturers, breast milk is live and formula, including life'sDHA and life'sARA is dead. Those same infant formula manufacturers that buy life'sDHA and life'sARA are bombarding you with its marketing messages that its formula is what you need, because "it's your baby," and this before even telling you what is required by the U.S.-backed International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes regulation, requiring infant formula companies to preface their product information with statements that breastfeeding is the best way of feeding babies and that a substitute should only be used after consultation with health professionals.

To really drive home the point, infant formula will never remotely be the replacement for mother's breast milk the unethical, unscrupulous, and whatever other qualifying description you could insert to describe the we-need-more-customers-so-we're-going-to-falsely-influence-new-and-succeeding-generations-of-mothers-to-use-our-very-convenient-closer-than-ever-to-mother's-breastmilk-formulas-due-to-our-so-great-it's-necessary-for-life-life'sDHA-and-life'sARA-which-also-is-part-and-parcel-clinically-proven-to-improve-brain-and-eye-development-quite-possibly-leading-to-Mensa-like-and-eagle-eyed-children-and-oh-by-the-way-we're-obligated-to-tell-you-mother's-milk-ain't-so-bad-either--most-all-infant-formula-manufacturing-companies.

Returning from the bioscientists and marketing gurus of the science-fiction infant formula manufacturing world, and back to reality, Nature's One Baby's Only Organic Toddler formula is actually an infant formula. Its infant formula is formulated according to the ingredients and nutrients prescribed in U.S. regulatory law and called the Infant Formula Act.

However, because Nature's One is a company that strongly encourages breastfeeding, at least through the infant's first twelve months, rather than call it what it really is and unduly influence mothers to use dead formula over live breast milk, they call it a "toddler formula" rather than what every other company calls it, "infant formula."

Didn't someone say something earlier about a company honest with itself thus honest with, and about, the world-at large: in other words, looking out for mother's and baby's interests more so than their own.

While all of what I summarize here is well and good, and I even asked you to "take it from me," I encourage you to do your own research so that you can formulate your own informed opinion on Baby's Only Organic Toddler Formula by Nature's One, other infant formula manufacturers, corn syrup in all of its forms and health implications, publicly held Martek Biosciences Corp. and its life'sDHA and life'sARA.

Thank you for this article. Please continue researching !

Additionally, the FDA has secured samples of Baby’s Only Organic® Toddler formulas (Dairy, Soy, Lactose Free and Dairy with DHA/ARA) from our inventory for testing in its Atlanta Laboratories. The FDA has notified us our inventory of product is not restricted and can be sold. There is no FDA hold.

There are countries that do have established regulations for total and inorganic arsenic levels and the organic brown rice syrup the Nature's One uses tests significantly below these regulated limits. In China the inorganic arsenic limit is 1 ppm while in the UK the total arsenic limit is 2 ppm - Nature's Only arsenic levels are SIGNIFICANTLY below that.

  • John Tunca2/25/2012

Lastly, there are several posts from people on Nature's One Facebook page who have had their child or children (who use Baby's Only exclusively) test for arsenic and received results that show there is no health concern. One person tested at a level 6 and their pediatrician said anything under 23 is normal.

I do not work for the company, I'm simply a product of being skeptical at anything the media tells me. This forces me forces me to research the claims more and majority of the time I find the media is in the business of selling misinformation, anything that makes a good news story. Anyone remember the big study and claim that red m&m's give cancer? That was a good one.

  • T. H. Pankey2/21/2012

Teresa, I feel fine. It was and still is the best commercially available formula on the market. Go to Nature's One's website and check their response; very informative, unlike the news media.

  • Teresa2/21/2012

How do you feel about this formula now that it is found to have the highest levels of aresenic of all organic baby formulas due to the brown rice syrup??????

    You're welcome Whitlow.

I just discovered the horrors of infant formula by doing a little research. I breastfed for two months but when I returned to work I could not pump at work. I am a nurse in a long term care facility and it was impossible to find the privacy as well as not being able to "leave" my patients unattended. I started researching formula and was horrified. I recently found Baby's Only and after thorough comparison by me and my pediatrician, it is all I will ever use again. I understand why they label it the way they do and if you were to contact them they will explain exactly what you wrote. If Alexander below had taken the time to compare the nutritional content in Baby's versus products such as Similac, Enfamil, and GoodStart, they would see that Baby's Only is just as nutritional WITHOUT all the dangerous toxins. My son's health, not a label, is my only concern. Thank you so much for this much needed informative article, I will be passing it on!

  • Sabrina Brz4/14/2010

Regardless of what adjective you use to describe the formulas - infant or toddler, they are all formulas that try to mimic breastmilk. If you compare the nutritional information, they are all equal on the "chemical" level. Just becuase Baby's Only calls it Toddler Formula, doesn't make it unsuitable for infants. Baby's Only nutritional values are comparable to (if not exceed) other formulas. If you are uncertain, print out the nutritional info from the webpage and bring it to your doctor, along with the nutrional info from one of the "major" formula companies. I did and the pediatrician saw nothing that sets Baby's Only aside as a formula meant for toddlers.
I ended up picking Baby's Only because it didn't use corn syrup and whey (a dairy "by product"). Earth's Best USED to not contain whey, but they changed the formulation recently without informing the consumer.

  • maria3/12/2010

Apparently you and your pediatricion are retards ...natures one is an infant formula ...called toddler formula because the company is promoting breast feeding as the first choice ..my grand daughter ..has been fed with natures one ..from her 4 week on ...she has consistenly scored in the high 90% of height and 86% of weight...she is at least a month ahead on her milestones ..never had constipation or colic no ear infections ...no doctors visits except for her well baby appointments ...i recomed this formula ..to anyone...the only drawback its hard to find so we ordered her monthy supply from the company directly

  • Melanie, mom of 21/15/2010

Thank you for this article! We've used Baby's Only for both our girls after breastfeeding was no longer an option for just the reasons you included here. We've always avoided corn syrup too and here's another reason to do so - mercury contamination. Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html
